Looks like it has to be bankruptcy

Well if you read my introduction post you know that dh and I have like $30,000 in debt. We were looking to go into debt consolidation because he was getting a promotion and a raise to $40,000\yr (double what he was making). Well last week he got fired on a technicality:( He does loss prevention and he was required to make a case (catch someone stealing) at least once a week, and the week b4 last he didn't he only got a credit card fraud case (evidently doesn't count). So he is now delivering pizzas and looking for a new job. We are hanging on ok but the idea of debt consolidation is out the question now. So as soon as we can make some money to save we'll start saving toward filing bankruptcy:( Just had to vent a little. Things were looking so good, but I'm trying to stay in the holiday spirit. Even on a tight budget we managed to throw together a fairly good Christmas, so it should be a good holiday.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to everyone!

Hugs... I am certain it is a difficult decision to make. If that is what you decide then just do it and get it behind you. Better times are ahead. Try not to act out of panic and remember to breathe and get lots of O2 to your brain when you think of all possible remedies. I know you will find lots of support here. Many have been in you position and lived to tell about it regardless of which route they took. Remember the turtle....

Go to your local library or bookstore and checkout/but the book "The Total Money Makeover." by Dave Ramsey. I just purchased it a few days ago and I really think this guy is on to something. There are so many testimonials in the book about people who have dug their way out of tons of debt. I am also facing bankruptcy myself and am hoping to dig myself out with his plan. Also he has a website that is www.daveramsey.com he has certified financial counselors everywhere and you can look one up near you and email them or call them for extra assistance. He also has other books out but I haven't read any others yet- "Financial Peace"-he talks about that one a lot. Also if you do decide to declare bankruptcy you can find an atty who accepts payment plans that way you can pay a little bit at a time and it will get the creditors off your back and prevent them from declaring and judgements or wage garnishments on you. Hope this helps you guys! Let me know if this helps!!

Just wanted to say I'm sorry about your husband losing his job, doesn't sound fair. What was the policy for firing staff? Was there no warning? Sorry this happened to your family so close to Christmas. Like Becky said, was he not able to file unemployment or does the pizza delivery pay better?

Well he is doing the pizza thing under the table so it is paying just as much as his $10\hr after taxes that we were living off of. With unemployment don't you get to take what you've paid in or something? He is only 20 and if that is the case he hasn't paid all the much in. Besides in MD to be on unemplyment I think you have to prove that your job searching and such ( he is, but I wouldn't want them to find out about the pizza job). He wasn't given any warning but MD law doesn't require any to my understanding, however he was working in DE now that I think of it hmmmm.... He agreed to make a case every week during his probationary period which was until the end of Dec. and he failed to make an official case that week.

Thank you for your kind words, they are appreciated.

Hi Jessi,

I used to live in MD, and I can remember when members of my family had lost their jobs, but they knew they had another opportunity coming around (someone who was going to guarantee them a job after a certain date, etc), so in order to keep their unemployment benefits until then, they would only ask for applications at businesses that said they weren't hiring. For example, they'd go in and ask for an application, and when the employee said, "I'm sorry, we're not hiring right now", they would say, "Thanks. Could I have an application anyway for when you do begin hiring again?", and they'd always get one.

This might be a way for your husband to keep his under-the-table pizza delivery job and still be able to obtain unemployment pay for a short while until he finds another job he likes.
