Have you seen this year they are going to give you an instant win ticket and you can possibly double your refund? (up to $10,000) Hey, I know my chances are small, but how great would that be? Maybe this could be a year where going to them would pay off instead of me paying them. LOL

I had a bad experience with H&R. I used them for years, but then in the 2002 tax year, our final year using them, I began getting phonecalls about a week or two after they had processed my refund papers. Calls from companies selling new windows, house siding, pressure washing, landscaping, roofing companies, etc, and they all had similar pitches...."We understand you are getting a refund this year in the amount of $xxxx.xx, and we would like to talk to you about (fill in the product)." The only way for these companies to know the exact dollar amount of our refund was from H&R. Surpringly, when I called our local H&R branch, they admitted that the company, as a whole, does sell lists of names (although I'm not sure if they have stopped this practice since that time), and that they were sorry and would send me a $10 off coupon for the following year's tax preparation. A few months later, I saw a notice in our local paper about others who had had their information sold by H&R, and there was mention of a class action lawsuit about it as well, but I'm not sure what came of it. We never dealt with H&R again. I figure I pay them enough in preparation fees....they shouldn't try to make money by handing over my privacy.
But like I said, that was years ago, so hopefully they have stopped this practice.
I don't know how much H&R charges, but I have found TurboTax is a great tax time tool. You can purchase it online for between $5.95 for 1040 EZ to $29.95 for TurboTax Premier (which is for people with tax returns way more complicated than I need). They ask questions and pinpoint possible mistakes. I can do it at my convience, go back if I need to add more info and file online for free (they send me a rebate). I can even file taxes in my PJs LOL. Can't do that with H&R!
Good luck on winning the $10,000. I would love to know someone who actually won one of those contests.
