Anyone planning a vacation for this year
| Sun, 01-16-2005 - 9:41am |
Are you planning a vaction this year or are you not? Are you going to be going away or staying home? Is debt affecting your plans and how so? Are you saving for it or are you going to finance it some other way? Are you looking forward to your vacation, or is it a trip or time away you'd rather not take this year? Are you still trying to pay off past vacations, or are you still trying to catch up financially from time away from work? Is it not the time right now to think about this?
I am still undecided except for some daytrips....

I take a vacation every year to see family since I don't live anywhere near them and it's the only way many of them get to see dd. I do take trips to see a friend that lives a few states away, but that only costs me gas and tolls, not that expensive. My trips home are expensive with flights for me and dd. Once we are there the trip is cheap, we don't rent a car, stay with my mom or sister and basically live off them for a week :)
This is only the second year I'm paying cash for a trip. The first time was two years ago when I was separated and had sold my house, so I had cash from that. Last year's trip is sitting on a zero interest card. I've done good not charging since last summer, except for things I will pay right off and I'm going to see if I can keep that off in 2005.
I have a couple of trips planned for sure this year with another one sitting in the back of my mind.
My husband travels to Washington state frequently for his job and I may join him for a birthday weekend get-away. He has enough frequent flyer miles for a free ticket and I will be staying in his company paid for room. We will just need to pay for meals and incidentals.
My brother is getting married in Minneapolis this summer, so I will be traveling home for that. We are still undecided if we will travel in our RV or if I drive up there with the girls and my DH flies in. If we drive the RV, then my husband will be taking vacation time and we will do some traveling in northern Minnesota. If I drive the girls and hubby flies in, then I can take the girls up north myself and DH can save his vacation time. If he does that, then we will probably drive the RV to Washington state and take a family vacation that way.
If the budget permits, then I will take the girls back to Minnesota again during fall break. This is a nice time of year because the weather is nicer and there are fewer people. We make tourist stops along the way and it is a sanity saver because we don't drive each other crazy sitting at home.
I pay for these trips mostly with cash that I have saved from "extra" paychecks (My DH is paid every other week and gets two "extra" checks per year). Sometimes a little bit gets put on the credit card, but it gets paid off shortly after. This year may be a little better in terms of my husband earning free hotel nights due to his frequent traveling.

Originally, we hadn't planned to take a vacation. We have never taken one since my son was born. However, this past weekend, we took Ds to a karate tournament and stayed at a hotel about 5 hours away from our home. What a change that made in our feelings towards vacations. We had already started a "spare change vacation fund" shortly after the first of the year, but now we're really excited about spending time away as a family. We have another karate tournament to travel to in late March (free hotel due to frequent flier points and we'll be driving there so we can pack a cooler of food like we did this time). On the way back from the tournament this morning, we stopped at the Florida and Georgia welcome centers so we could get brochures for places we might like to see. The goal is to plan a 2 week fun-filled vacation sometime in September or October, and between our spare change fund and Dh's frequent flyer points, enjoy our first family vacation that won't break the bank. :-D

Kind of- we're going to do a few days trips and probably some camping.
Is debt affecting your plans and how so?
If we didn't have debt, we'd take a NICE vacation. Perhaps to Vancouver, BC to visit my best friend, or FL or CA, or tons of other places!!!
Are you saving for it or are you going to finance it some other way?
Financed as $ becomes available through bonuses and such and socked into the ING account. Also usually garage sale proceeds go toward family outings.
Vacation is what you make it to be. I look forward to it as time to get away from it all, do something different and relaxing and enjoy time with family/friends and making memories. You can do that in a local county park or a continent away.
