Question about dropping long distance
| Thu, 01-20-2005 - 9:18pm |
I know a couple of people on the board have mentioned that they've canceled their long distance service and gone to just using pre-paid phone cards. I figured out that I can save about $100/year if I do this.
But how exactly does it work? Are you still able to make "local long distance" calls from your phone? (I live in an area where there are several different local area codes.) And are you still able to call 800 and other toll-free numbers? I guess you have to since that's how phone cards are used.
If anyone can shed some light on the details, I'd appreciate it.
Thanks!

We've used a card for a few years now. In our area, everything but the next town over is long distance (I kid you not!)and we like the 3 cents/minute deal.
It takes a couple more steps to make a call, but the savings are worth it. Calling the toll free numbers is easy-no need for the card to be used.
We got our card from Sam's club, and when the minutes run down, there's a number on the back to call to reload it without having to go to the store. I can't remember how many minutes we can load on ours-I think the last time I did that I put 1500 on there. (It was a few months ago, lol)
I would do it all over again-it really has been better than the long distance company stuff.

You know, I have heard of using phone cards, and I don't know if you have a cell phone? But DH and I use our cell phones for long distance calling (We cancelled it on our land line, and that number is stripped down to the basic plan). Anything after 9 pm in the country is free. That's a good thing for us as I have a friend as far as Alaska that I call.
I just thought if you all had a cell phone plan that might be something to consider as well? Don't know what's cheaper in the long run for you though?
Two Cents.
