Does anyone know about how these places work that claim they can lower your IRS debt? or a board I can go to with questions? Thank you, Marie

Marie - I would be very, very cautious about *any* such companies.
Here is information about offer in compromise with the IRS:
All my best,

I agree with Danni on this. I wouldn't trust these companies that say they can lower your IRS debt.
Have you contacted the IRS to set up a repayment plan for your IRS debt? My FIL has late-stage alzheimers, and it was recently discovered that in the early stages of his disease he did not file any taxes at all for about three years. He was the one who handled all the paperwork in the house, so my MIL never thought to ask him about it. In his mind, he felt he was a war veteran (Korean War), so he should not have to pay taxes...so he just didn't. Needless to say, she has a hefty tax bill to pay now. She was able to work out monthly payments that she could afford. They asked her how much she could pay, and her son worked out a budget for her so she could give them an honest answer of how much she could put towards repaying the debt. She said they were very nice about it when she explained that she just needed a monthly payment that was low so she could afford to pay it over time.
