If you follow the above link, and scroll down, there are two sites suggested for obtaining a free credit report. You have to enter cc info and sign up for their credit monitoring service, but you can cancel immediately after receiving your credit report and they will not charge your cc. I tried both of them this morning, and had better luck with the transunion one, which allowed me to cancel online with no hassle (and sent me an email confirmation that it had been cancelled). The other one was low-hassle, but I did have to call an 888 number and speak with someone who tried to talk me out of cancelling, but it wasn't high pressure. I checked mine and dh's using the transunion one, and it was worth it.
Speaking of which (drum roll please)... mine and my dh's credit scores are in the upper 700's!! (783 and 798 respectively). Woo-hoo!! Dh's was in the low 500's a year and a half ago, but thanks to aggressively paying down debts, contesting (and winning) a couple of items, and the additional time since our last delinquint payments (now three years), our scores have shot through the roof. Hurray!
Anyway, thought I'd share the link. Take care,
Heather

I know! I knew our credit score had gotten better, because we started getting better and better credit offers in the mail, lol, but I was amazed that it was by so much!!
One place I visited that helped us a lot was www.goodmortgage.com. They are mortgage brokers, but they have a huge learning section on their site, and one of the sections is about improving your credit. It gives detailed advice for contesting items on your credit, including getting rid of negative things, even if they are partially true. One of the things we did, was we contested the status of a collection item and a charge-off (they were paid in full, but still showing as delinquent), and because our creditors didn't have full documentation to prove the items, they were not only updated but taken off our reports altogether, as though they had never happened. Those two items were never on my report, so mine never fell below around 700 (maybe it hit the upper 600's--don't really remember--since my income is almost non-existent, my credit report doesn't matter much to lenders, lol). Anyway, apparently this is quite common, and it's quite easy to do by sending a few letters. Anyway, read the articles at www.goodmortgage.com--they're very helpful.
Anyway, yes, there is hope! It really doesn't take that long once you get on the right track and start doing the right stuff. Even if you can't get stuff wiped off your report, the older the negative items are, the less they hurt your score. And eventually they fall off your report altogether.
Good luck and blessings,
Heather
P.S. Thank you to the person who posted the link for the free reports that will be available to everyone by law this year. I am in an East coast state, so mine's not available until September, so I got impatient, lol. But if you can wait, it is certainly a good idea to get your reports that way.
Lurker here with a quick question. Has anybody actually been able to access annualcreditrepeort.com ??? Everytime I try it I get a "page not found" message.
I also want to say that you are all doing a great job. I just read this board because it is so interesting and their is so much advice here. We are not in debt ourselves, but I have still learned so much here and I wish everybodu the best of luck on their struggle to financial freedom. You will love it when you get there.
Good luck to all,
Renate
Yup, I'm able to access it. It is mistyped in your message, so perhaps you are typing it incorrectly? Try this link:
