Update on me

Hi, All!!

Just wanted to pop in to report that I am loving my new job! I was the one who had taken 8 months off from gainful employment to 'find myself' career-wise, LOL!! I currently have an entry-level position in the healthcare field, with a goal of entering nursing school by fall of o6.

As many of you know, I racked up a serious balance on my credit cards while I was voluntarily out of work. Fortunately we received a sizeable tax return this year (first time EVER and a long story to boot), so I was able to pay off my stupid BOA card and most of Citi, which leaves me at...

a manageable $1,637 on the citi card (0% APR until Nov 05).

Now that I am earning a paycheck again, the urge to use the cards for anything has gone away and I feel like I am back on track. I don't think I've charged anything since late Jan/early Feb.

So, that's where I'm at. Hope everyone is doing well!

BK

deciding to be happy doesn't mean that everything is perfect, but that you had decided to look beyond the imp

Congratulations on your progress and good luck for continued success. I have a question - I am currently not working after the birth of my second son. I would eventually like to return to the working world but I don't want to go back to a JOB - I want a career. What measures did you take to decide what your desired career would be? Just curious.

Again, congrats on all your hard work.

Hi Christie,

Well, I had been drawn to the idea of nursing for well over a year. The old me would have enrolled in school first (borrowing the 10k+ needed to do so) and THEN gone out with another degree in hand to see if I had the right stuff to actually do it ;)

Instead I spent about 6 months reading books about nursing, searching the internet for information, and investigating entry level jobs to find the one that was best for me. For example, I found out that a nursing home was not the environment I was looking for. Right now I am working with seniors but in their own homes, helping them to remain independent by assisting them with personal care, preparing meals, light housekeeping, transportation, etc.

I found out that the salary range for nurses in my area is good, the hours are flexible, and there will be a wide variety of work settings to choose from (hospitals, private practices, schools, community agencies, nursing homes, even teaching college if I ever earn a Masters). Since I have a desire to do something USEFUL at this point in my life, it all seems to fit.

I knew when I quit my job that I did NOT want to work in another office (a pattern I fell into and stayed in for nearly a decade).

That's pretty much it in a nutshell. Mostly I just needed to learn to listen to what my gut was telling me all along!

Hope that helps!
BK
