Do you give yourself a weekly spending allowance? If so, what is it? Also what do you use yours for? Occasional lunch out? Starbucks? Cigarettes? Poker night?

I am trying to convince DH into doing this. Just curious.

We've started the weekly allowance system since we started budgeting, and it is wonderful for us!

Hi Christie,

The dh and I have instituted a weekly allowance for awhile now and it works very well for us.
It is a budgeted expense but I only track the amounts given, not how we choose to spend it.
We don't question each other about it as it's our personal amount we can spend on whatever we choose.
In the beginning we fiddled with the amount given a couple times until we agreed on an amount that was enough for both of us. We get the same amounts.

My allowance has recently gone up since I have paid off some debt and my salary increased. So I allow myself $75 a week. I never spend money on Starbucks (don't drink coffee), or cigarrettes (don't smoke).... I spend my money on lunches out once or twice a week, an inexpensive dinner out with my boyfriend once in a while, going out to drink at the bar, see a movie, Amazon books, etc.

Any money that I don't spend I try to put into savings. :)

Weekly allowance is for cigerattes. I buy them once a week and if I run out before that week us up, then no more for me. I try to make sure they last LOL
Eating out is twice a month and coffee is whenever I have extra money and wouldn't feel guilty buyinga latte.
Oh I guess I need to add dh too. He has an allowance for his snuff. He doesn't go by his allowance very well, so I really have to be a witch.

My dh gets $20 and I get $15 per week. This is strictly "fun" money -- gas, groceries, etc. are a different category. I often use mine for scrapbook stuff -- dh usually spends his on fast food lunches (trying to break him of that habit).

The weekly spending allowance is a super idea.
Anyone who is in debt should still be allowed to be paid
a specific amount each week.
Budgeting to pay off outstanding debt is hard enough. It is
even harder if you are not allowed some 'mad' money.
If you are given a set amount each week, you can
blast your way out of debt and still feel like you are
accomplishing something even though you have some spending money.
