Consignment shops?

Hi, I am cleaning up a bit, and I have a ton of kids clothes that are just taking up space. I am up in the air as to whether I should take them to a consignment shop, or just donate them to charity. I called the store that does this around here, and they give you 40% of whatever the item sold for, and mail their checks quarterly. Is this the standard? they also will take toys, books, furniture, etc. Also, does anybody know, does the money you make off of this kind of thing affect your taxes? Just want to make sure I am not just creating another headache for myself. thanks!! Heather

If the items are in good shape, by all means, take them to a consignment shop. I believe 40% is standard, but I'm not sure. You can also try your luck selling some stuff on E-Bay.

I have four kids and have sometimes used consignment shops for outgrown stuff--my problem was that my kids usually tore up/stained their clothing so the shops wouldn't accept them. It's definitely less work than a garage sale, though.

I wholeheartedly recommend SHOPPING at consignment stores. That's what I mainly did for the younger ones, after I came to my senses as to "my kid gets only the best". (Oldest kid got Stride Rite and Gap--what a waste--she threw her new Stride Rite shoe out the window on the freeway.) Until they start caring about what they wear that is, then ya head to the mall.

Another thought/caution.

I think those percentages are pretty standard. Be careful that the shop you use is there to stay. I had an experience where one closed up and vanished before paying me for my stuff. Sometimes they don't stay in business very long--tiny margin.
