When I started on my debt reduction journey 11 months ago, I knew one of the things I would have to do - besides reducing spending even further and going onto a debt management program - was increase my income. Fortunately I work for a fantastic small firm where I was able to say I wanted to change careers, and given the opportunity to do that. I received a raise in January, and this morning I received a promotion, which means another raise in June and confirmation that I'm on the partner track.
The past couple of years have been hard work - cutting back on many of the things that make life fun, my SAHD DH working on the weekends, me working 55-65 hour weeks for the past nine months and traveling for 3 days every 4-6 weeks - but the payoff is finally coming to fruition. We are buying our first house, our debt is under control, DH was offered a very good job for this summer and was able to quit his weekend job, and even my oldest DD was able to get an after-school job as a mother's helper which is helping to pay for her karate classes.
A lot of this has to do with timing - my children are no longer little and DH and I are able to work more. There were several years when the kids were little and I just had to grit my teeth and pray that we would survive until they were old enough for me to make more money. Finally we are here. We still have credit card debt, and soon we will have mortgage debt and two home equity loans to pay off, but now we know we will be able to do it. I'll be on this board for a long time yet!
