We are planning on getting very needed groceries (food, toilet paper, garbage bags, etc) tonite at SuperWalmart which is 40 minutes away. Problem is that dh's check gets direct deposited tomorrow am and I need to write a check for the groceries tonite (around 7pm) It's my only evening off and I am not taking my antsy 3 year old the whole way there by myself during the day! Do you think it will go thru instantly because of that new fast check system or will it not go through until after am? Thanks so much in advance!! Nicki

I can't make any guarantees, but when I write a check to Walmart here, it usually takes several days to clear. When I use the debit card, it is instantly withdrawn from my account. I wrote a check there on Monday and it still hasn't cleared. I don't know if all of the Walmarts are the same or maybe some are using the new technology, but that's my experience - and I go to Walmart at least once a week and almost always pay by check.

Thanks so much girls! I guess it makes sense that Walmart would have to cash checks on the next business day since it would be after bank closing~~~~ but I just wasn't so sure about that new check law that passed. I was afraid they would zip my check thru and the machine would take it like a debit immediately. I do know that my bank always counts deposits before withdrawals at the end of the day. I should be fine since I know DH's check will be in there tomorrow~~ thanks again, Nicki

Ummm... I might be missing something, but it was my impression that the recent electronic funds transfer act changed the rules so that checks do not have to be deposited physically in order to clear. I believe nowadays it's possible for a check to clear your bank immediately, just as though it were a debit transaction...

I guess it's a little late now, though--so I hope all goes well. (Keeping my fingers crossed for you).

Blessings,

I agree with Heather. The new law is called check 21. Your check is treated the same as a debit card. A lot of people would "float" checks but now you can't do that anymore. I used to do that all the time. I would get groceries around Wednesday/Thursday and Dh's check would be there Friday morning. But now I don't do that.

Here is a link that explains the law http://www.bankrate.com/brm/news/chk/20040924a1.asp

Hope you were able to get your groceries.

I checked my bank's website this am and DH's deposit was there but no sign of the Walmart check I wrote last nite at approx. 8pm. (And no negative sign before my balance amount!) WHewwww....

After reading the last 2 posts, I will definately NOT take that chance again!! The bank was nice enough to refund me the NSF a few weeks ago because I never bounced before, but now they would think bad of me!
