Anyone a Dave Ramsey Member?
| Mon, 07-18-2005 - 9:48am |
Is anyone a member on Dave Ramsey's website? I would love to see the discussion forums, but cannot justify $8.95 a month or $90 a year.
I understand trying to make a profit..but aren't the books enough, does he have to profit off the website also?
Any other suggestions for FREE Debt discussion forums or message boards?

Shannon,
Thanks for your suggestion for food on the shoestring budgeting boards, i guess we think alike since we are on the same boards!
This is a funny question, since i keep harping on the one mary hunt book i've been reading, i checked out her website and you have to pay to read everything and i thought the same thing, aren't the book profits enough for her????? I am waiting for the library to get the dave ramsey book for me, i have it on hold and i'm curious to read it.

I'm a sort-of member on Dave Ramsey's site. I say sort of, because I'm grandfathered in from when the site was brand new, and there were only certain areas that had to be paid for. I normally just read the forums anyway.
The main difference there is that the people there are pretty much focused on doing it "dave's way". When a new person shows up, it seems that the first thing that they're asked to do is to post their budget so that it can be picked apart. I don't agree with that, for a variety of reasons. They are set on paring everyone's budget down to the bare minimums and many do not hesitate to tell a person to get rid of XYZ. The thing I know from reading the books and going through FPU is that 'toys' are allowable-as long as they are planned for and can be paid for in cash. I guess that's the difference between "extreme Gazelle-ness" and being in debt, lol. I don't think he makes much of a profit off the website, though.
I think this board is very good for help-just ask the right questions, and be sure to let people know that you want an honest (even if it's sorta brutal) answer.

There is a new, FREE Dave Ramsey discussion board that can be found at http://www.livinglikenooneelse.com/forum/index.php?
You just have to register to see all the forums. But registering is free and easy. If you decide to register, be sure to check your bulk mail to complete your registration--it sometimes shows up there instead of the main email folder. HTH!!!

Nope! At least not that I've ever come across. Usually, though, they are new members there on their one week free guest pass, so they haven't (yet) paid the $8.95/month fee to join.
One of the first things that the 'guru's' over there tell the new people to get rid of is faster internet. 'Get a cheap dial-up.' I would rather beat my head against the wall, thanks! (Of course, if we actually had to PAY for cable-internet ourselves, I might feel differently. DH has to have it for his work, so his work reimburses us for it.)
I don't post over there, just here. I enjoy this board immensely!

But then don't you pay more for your phone? I have very little land-line services, so my phone bill is only $14 and then my DSL is $30. I feel that's a pretty good deal, my phone bill used to be $50 all by itself.
I don't know. When we had dial-up, the charges weren't on our phone bill, we received a separate internet bill from the phone company. We had the 'be on as long as you want' internet plan.
Although I think it's good to see where the budget could be trimmed, and I think in some cases the suggestions they make are really good, I still don't think that it's OK to say, "Welcome here. Now post your budget (that you spent hours trying to get to be a zero-based budget) and let us pick it apart." It would be different if someone ASKED to have their budget reviewed. I dunno.
I have no idea why that bugs me so much. Heck, we all share stuff like that fairly freely over here, myself included.
Who knows...

No, what I was saying is that my phone bill is only $14 for a reason, I have no services on it except I can receive incoming calls. If I make any outgoing calls, even locally, I'd be charged. To have a phone line that I could make outgoing (dialup) calls, I'd need a more expensive plan. The cheapest landline I've ever heard of is $25 if you want to make calls on it, and then you'd pay at least $10 per month for dialup, that's $35. I pay $45 for my no-services dialup plus DSL, only $10 per month more than if I had dialup.
Have you ever seen someone say, "no thanks" to the request that they post their budget?
Cool I will check that out.
Not that I don't love it here. This is my favorite place. I did check out Suze Ormans YF&B Forum. I have the code from the book if anyone wants to check it out.

Me too, And honestly I have no idea how we are in debt. My husband is constantly making fun of how cheap I am. Actually I know its because he needs big brand new toys that costs thousands. uh! But really I am too cheap to pay ivilliages membership.
