Hello everyone!
Well, three weeks are over, it is back to the office again. And I really do not feel like it, I can tell you. It is not that I don't like my job, or coworkers, or even the boss - it is a money issue: I noticed that one of my worst, debt inflating spending habits is having lunch with coworkers and my boss. Lunch frequently is the only time during our workday when we actually have time to sit don and talk things over with the phone constantly buzzing or we having other things to do. And a few friendly remarks and knowing what's going on in their families also makes it easier to related and to cope with outbreaks of anger or disagreements in what all of us consider to be a highly stressful job.
So how am I to get the positive side of lunching together without the negative of spending money I actually do not have? I really got to enjoy that feeling of living of appx. 30 $ for food per week without feeling deprived at all.
I'd appreciate all ideas, and I even think my coworkers wouldn't be adverse to switching form the cafeteria to something else, either :-)
Greetings, Jordis

I like the idea of a big snack ahead of time and then something small--a little treat--when you go to the cafeteria.
If the others are interested in other ideas, maybe you could suggest a potluck of sorts. Each week (or day, or whatever), someone could take a turn bringing a main "course"--sandwiches, soup, pasta--and everyone else could bring side dishes (even just a big bag of chips, some baked beans, whatever). The person bringing the main dish would be responsible for bringing enough for everyone and might spend as much as she ordinarily would on eating out, but everyone else would spend only a dollar or two a piece on their contribution (less if they're very good shoppers and creative). You would take turns bringing the main dish.
Or you could just do it traditional potluck style--everyone bring whatever random dish they feel like.
Good luck. And good for you for looking for alternatives!
Hi Jordis,
well, I hate the Mensa, so I bring a lunch. There are wonderful brown bag lunch recipes online that make lunch a little more exciting then just the average sandwich. Maybe, if you have a recreation room or something like that in your office (don't know where you work), you can ask the other ladies in your office to join you for a brown bag lunch. Bring your own drinks, set a pretty table if you can and just enjoy. There may even ben ideas on how to be creative as far as your lunch break goes, i.e. a picknick in the park or whatever.
Now, that is all theory... I usually eat my sandwich at the computer as I either work or surf the net ... but the theory does sound nice, doesn't it?
Have a great start
