Danni, so sorry to hear that, that is really hard. Luckily you know what to do and you have the tools to take care of it. It always seeme like we take one step forward and two steps back, doesn't it? This too shall pass, don't let it stress you out, let it be even more of a motivator to become and stay debt free!

Danni, I can empathize! I found $1000 on the Sign & Travel section of my Amex statement about 6 months ago. They were my own expenses, but I hadn't realized that certain things automatically go to the S&T section (hotels, plane tix); then only a small portion of the S&T amount is included in the "amount due" shown on the payment stub, which is what I had paid. Of course by the time I realized I was carrying this S&T balance (at something like 22% interest), it was months later and I didn't have the cash to pay it.

I called Amex and cancelled the S&T option. Then 3 months later, they sent me a letter - "congratulations! you now have the S&T option, and all expenses larger than $X will now go to an installment account!" I called them immediately and said NOTHING is EVER to automatically go to any installment account, for any reason! The whole point of paying $55 to Amex every year is to make sure I pay for everything in full!

Good luck, Danni.

Hi Kelley - I didn't even know that AmEx had this sort of revolving portion.

All my best,
