Hi all,
Sorry I've been MIA. I've been in Colorado, and came home to our internet router being out of commission--meaning, no internet from home.
Anyway, a few quick updates--someone suggested a while back that I pay my dad back in full asap with a convenience check from a credit card. At the time, I said that he wouldn't accept that, and that I wasn't worried about it since I'm paying him a fair interest rate and it's a good investment for him.
But while in Colorado visiting my folks, the topic of cash flow kept coming up--they've always got about six hundred irons in the fire, several real estate transactions going, plus they're building a house with their own hands on their 35 acre parcel, and so on and so forth. Dad mentioned a few times how they would do this or that when cash flow permitted, not that they are hurting for cash, but just that it can slow things down. So I chose my moment carefully and asked him whether it would help them if I were able to pay them the full amount of the loan within the next couple months.
He asked me lots of detailed questions about how I would do that, and cautioned me about various pitfalls of using credit cards for that purpose, and after some discussion, said that if it would save us some money and we were careful about the pitfalls then yes, it would make things a bit easier for them.
So, I just got some convenience checks for 3.99% for the life of the loan (I could do a 0% transfer for a year, but then I'd have to surf, and as my dad pointed out, surfing can damage your credit score), and I'm going to write him a check for the full $8500 this month. Cash for him, lower interest rate for me.
Of course, now it goes on my credit record, but I'm okay with that. I'm glad I'm doing the right thing by my parents. So, whoever it was that made that suggestion whenever it was, THANK YOU!! :)
In other news, I'm getting my cat on the 1st, and I'm very excited. And, of course, the supplies etc. are costing more than I expected (well, since I expected to spend more than I expected, does it really count as being more than I expected???). Oh, and we way overspent while on vacation--mostly because I picked up the tab for a lunch I had not anticipated, but I'm glad I did, because it was the right thing to do. And we're in a position to absorb unexpecteds like that now, so it isn't a major blow to our finances.
I'll just be glad when the money hemhorrage is over, and we can go back to our frugal ways.
Anyway, I'm sorry I haven't been replying, and I'll try to find the time to respond to some of the posts here soon. My in-laws are in town, though, so I need to get downstairs again and entertain. I hope to "talk" to ya'll soon.
Blessings,
Heather

Welcome back!
I'm sure it's a relief not to owe your Dad anymore.

Glad you had a good vacation!
I was one of the people who said to do the check thing, lol,so you're welcome. I just know that even with the best intentions, owing family money can do weird things to relationships. It'll defintely be motivating for you to pay off the credit card asap.
Congratulations on being a new 'parent.' Enjoy your cat!
