How do you get paid?
| Sun, 08-28-2005 - 12:37pm |
How do you get paid your primary income? Is it a salary, commission, trust fund, hourly wage, per job payment, allowance, etc? Do you get paid weekly, monthly, twice a month or once every 2 weeks, per job, other payment schedule? Is it a check, cash, direct deposit, other form of currency, swap or barter, gift cards, etc?
How do you manage your budget based on the way you are paid? Is there a better way for YOU to be paid that would help you manage your money better?

I get paid every other Friday via direct deposit.
I was just talking to DH about this topic.
He is paid twice a month, on the 15th and 26th. I love it, because he's on salary, so we know how much we'll receive. We pay mortgage, insurance, etc. . . from these checks. Actually, it's direct deposit, so he just gets the paper saying how much he was paid.
I, on the other hand, work for the state as a personal care provider and foster parent. As a personal care provider, the hours are called in my my employer (in this case, my mom, since my brother is the one who receives the care), and they mail me a paper saying how many hours are authorized. Then, a few days later, they mail me another slip of paper that's the invoice for care provided. I call in the hours, and then receive a check from the state about a week later. This is honestly the least organized, most wasteful system ever. It takes a week for the hours to be entered, a week to receive the paperwork, and then a week to receive the check. So, I was just paid this last week for July's care. But, it's money.
For the foster care, it's even less predictable. If we have a child, we get an allowance for that month. It is done like the personal care, but by the social worker instead of the employer. I can receive an invoice for foster care days of care at any time, but it's something like $11/day, so I don't put too much weight on this "payment." It's just being paid back for expenses for caring for a child.
I would LOVE to have a monthly payday for my "job" and be able to count on the state paying by that date. The state employees have made mistakes and underpaid me quite a few times, and have been up to two months behind in paying me. I love the work, but it's a huge burden not to be paid for 2 months; I have bills to pay!
I get paid every other week by direct deposit..I let the timeslips accumulate until the HR office gets fed up and mails them to me (I work 3rd when HR is not even there). I can check my statement on the Monday of the payweek, but the $$ isn;t in the bank until Thurs at midnight.
My dh gets paid bimonthly..on the 15th and the last business day of the month, also by direct deposit.
The only thing I don't like about this arrangement is that sometimes our pay days end up being on the same day, and that annoys me because then we are usually broke by the time we get paid again because i get a little excited and send our creditors more than I would otherwise.
Oh, we are both hourly, but our checks rarely vary by more than $20 either way.
I get paid every Thursday, it is direct deposited into my account ~ and I am paid on a Thursday for the prior week (Monday - Sunday).
Right now with money tight, weekly is better for me then every other week, or monthly, I think, since all my bills are due at different times and it keeps me having money coming in every week.
Im hourly...and right now my bosses are happy to have me there as much as I want, so that lets me have overtime. Thats also a big plus for me right now. I have worked salary before, and although the pay was ok, when I kept track of my hours, I made Very little!
The hardest part for me right now is I am on a longterm temp assignment (thru a temp agency). In the position that I work, they had a temp for a year, then promoted him (he's currently my boss), then replaced him with a woman they kept for a year, until she had to leave, and now me. I've been there I think 6 months now. Its hard for me because I know what the company is paying the temp agency FOR me, vs. what I am actually GETTING from the temp agency. and I just keep thinking "if they would just hire me outright, they could save, and I could still be earning more!" ~~ but of course things are never that simple. ;)

DH gets paid once a month. It's direct deposited into our checking account. I teach per course each semester and also get paid once a month.
I like it for bills but don't like that I usually am broke by the last week and then have a backlog of items to buy at the beginning of the month.
Our mixed issue is that we work for a university and they don't pay you until you've worked your first full month so when we moved here DH's first paycheck didn't come until the last day of September even though his contract started in the middle of August. It's the same way with per course-I started teaching last week and I'll see the first paycheck at the end of September. So, it was a nuisance when we arrived but on the other hand, when/if we ever leave then DH will get paychecks until the end of August even if we moved in June.

Well Brandon gets paid every other week on Thursday. Since we have direct deposit he actually gets it on Wednesday sometime after midnight. Then we are mailed his statement from corporate. I usually get that on Friday or Saturday. On the Tuesday before payday he can log on at work and see his paycheck anf file a dispute if it is wrong. (It has only been wrong once-- They shorted him $11 that we didn't even catch and he was wondering why the computer showed two checks..LOL)
Brandon also makes commission and gets a bonus for that. It comes on his regular checks. I think it is like every other check but sometimes there is a month he doesn't get one. I don't know how they figure that out but I have a list that Brandon brought me home. I have it marked on the calendar as "payday plus commission." Those are the good times that we have extra money that we put for big expenses. We are going to have to do better with not expecting this because he is up for a position that has no commission! He also gets a bonus every time they sign a new labor union contract. He got one a few weeks after he started working there and it was like $300 and something. That was a nice surprise. He also get s a percentage of the profit for the year based on your tenure.
I get my child support of $100 every other week. I am waiting on the form to change this
to direct deposit.
