Hurricane relief...

Hi, everyone. In the midst of wondering how I am going to pay for all of the medical bills, I did pause and send a small amount to disaster relief. It may not be much, but DH & I both agreed those hurricane victims dont have anything. I figure I can do without that extra fancy iced tea/coffee for a few weeks. Whiz.

We haven't decided what to do yet. I also heard that it was 3-4 months before people return home, but it could be longer depending on when they can fix the levees and drain the water. I can't even imagine in the slightest how it must feel to loose everything and not be allowed to go home for months. And if people can't go home, they can't go to work either.
And perhaps it sounds silly, but I work in the museum/archives field. New Orleans is incredibly rich in cultural and historical heritage. Much of that is probably going to be destroyed or irreparably damaged by water, pollution and mold - if anything is left. I know that this is nothing compared to loss of life and homes, but it is something I can relate to.

Hi there,

we have just decided to give some money, too. We have 'flooding season' here, too, though gladly enough the cities who had been flooded by torrential rains last week and the week before are hit a lot less than New Orleans and surroundings. It seems with the changing world climate and ongoing ignorance towards environmental needs and issues, we will see a lot more of these kinds of disasters. I can only pray for a change.

But that's a big and political issue, and to those hit by the floods and storm these thoughts are pretty far away right now. So the Red Cross is going to get what we can give right now.

Greetings, Jordis

DH and I are going to give to. We are also trying to come up with a way to get DD involved in helping, even in some small way, so she can understand that we help people when they need it.

I think, though that we will wait a couple of weeks before we donate. I have a feeling that once the 24 hr new coverage has stopped focusing on the damage and the people affected, then the money will dry up and that is when the charities will most need it.

I do know that hospitals outside of the area are accepting patients with no thought to insurance or charging for their services and there is one hospital here that is accepting patients and even paying for housing and food for the patients families. I think that is what our human spirit is all about. We see a need and we step in and help. Let's just hope more people are willing to do just that.

I'm waiting for my paycheck tomorrow and I'm hoping I'll have a couple of dollars left for the Red Cross.

I know they need the money badly. I'm trying to think of other things I can do as well outside of that. I've determined that tonight I'm going to go home and do a total house cleaning and what household/clothing I don't need is going to Goodwill and I'm taking any excess non-perishable food in my kitchen to the food shelf. I know those things are local to me but maybe if I can donate food to 2nd harvest here it can free up some for the Gulf Coast. And Goodwill is national so hopefully the funds can work for the Gulf as well.

Oh and give blood, heaven help me because I faint everytime I do it but it will help someone else so I'm in.

Remember, too, everyone, that donating can come in the form of your time, or even donating blood.

All my best,

The company I work for is so awesome. When the first troops went to war, they collected items and sent them to troops and have continued sending supplies even though it's "old news, then the Tsunami hit in December 2004. Again, they encouraged donations for the relief. They have now coordinated with the Red Cross to provide relief for hurricane victims.

I am also a Mary Kay Consultant and I just found out the Corporate Office is donating $1 million to help with aid. As a consultant, I am also donating a percentage of all sales, for the rest of the year. I encourage you, if you are a Mary Kay customer, ask your consulant to help others during this time.

My DD, who is 9, asked if we could donate all of the items we 'cleaned' out of her room this weekend. Bags of toys, clothing and books. She has really been touched, even with the limited exposure she has had, about the Hurricane events.

Unfortunately the media doesn't always cover the "good" news. All of us can make a difference.

Susan
