Hurricane relief...

Hi, everyone. In the midst of wondering how I am going to pay for all of the medical bills, I did pause and send a small amount to disaster relief. It may not be much, but DH & I both agreed those hurricane victims dont have anything. I figure I can do without that extra fancy iced tea/coffee for a few weeks. Whiz.

Gotta brag about my kid here-We know where we're giving, too. For us, it has a personal face. One of the guys my DH works with is stationed out of New Orleans. He & his family were able to get out, with some clothes, and his work tools, and the car, but that's about it. He's lost everything. I can't even begin to try and imagine how that must feel.

DH's boss sent an e-mail out to people who know this guy asking for them to send Wal-Mart gift cards to the family to help out. He has no idea they are coming, and we're glad to be able to send something.

I've got to brag about my kid, though! She's been working on a Girl Scout Badge (Consumer Power) this last month, and one of the activities she's had to do is to save all her pennies for a month, which she did. She had already decided to give the total to the Hurricane Katrina relief, but when her dad told us about this guy, she decided to send it to his family instead. We took them in to be counted today, and she had $4.61. She was a little disappointed that it wasn't more, but the teller and I told her that it would be enough for a gallon of milk and some bread.

The Dave Ramsey site is having a $10,000 in 10 Days thing, where people e-mail in about where they gave and how much. So, she did. And now, her letter is featured on the website! She's a little perplexed about why it's such a big deal, LOL. Like she says, "I gave because I could." (Gee, I wonder where in the world she possibly could have learned that?!?! LOL)

Here's the link:

Just scroll down to the bottom of the page where it says "Read an email from our youngest donor here!" and click on 'here'.

Hopefully the link will work. If not, I'll just copy and paste her e-mail.
I'm glad she's learned the lesson early!

Lisa,
That is just awesome. We have a friend whose DD is also 11. Last month, she decided to cut her very long hair to donate to an organization that makes wigs for kids going through chemo.

My kids are 3 years old. Tuesday, I took some stuff to the Salvation Army. I brought them along w/me and explained what the purpose was for.

Amanda did that too this last spring. The lady said, "Wow! You have enough for TWO wigs!" She was in shock after they cut her hair, though, lol. She has really thick blonde hair, with highlights that would cost a fortune in a salon.

For her, that was kind of personal too. My best friend's younger brother was diagnosed with leukemia(sp?) last winter, and is going through fairly aggresive chemo. He lost all his hair, and so I told her that she had just helped 2 kids have hair again until theirs came back. She wished she could send it to her Uncle Jeff, but I told her he would rather 2 little girls get it. She also had her whole class write get well letters to him when he was feeling blue about it all.

I am so blessed to have a kid like her!

HI, Kelli. I agree, the USA spirit is resilient. I mean, after 9/11, IMHO, I think it woke people up to the fact that disaster and challenge can arise almost anywhere. In 2003, we had the firestorms in S. California. I rememember driving along one of the roads after the fires, and it was really eerie--almost like a nuclear waste dump. The fires came very close to our house, and the sky was orange. There were so many things that were destroyed besides infrastructure----the very topography and types of plants that grew back changed, too. Sooo-I am donating what I can, to help. Whiz.
