SO UPSET

I have written here before while I was doing well. Then my son had surgery took my entire savings (only $600 at the time). Then I was saving up again for my emergency fund and my real estate dues which are $400 due in January, and I went and did something really really stupid. I didn't DEPOSIT money in time for it to clear so it wouldn't bounce any checks, and debit card runs. I had the money, and I didn't deposit it!!! NOW all my bank fees have wiped out my entire savings ($170) . I am SO upset with myself.

I didn't deposit the money this weekend, because I just wasnt' thinking about it at time. My dad is really sick, and the Dr.'s think it's cancer. He is having a biopsy today, and I went to visit this weekend. I know this is no excuse. I am just SO UPSET about this, I don't know how to get past it... :(

Hi, AN73. Dont be so hard on yourself. I, too, had bad habit of overdrafts, bank fees, late fees, bank taking $$$ from savings account (!) to cover the checking account OD's. l) Do you have the feature at your bank where you can transfer $$$ from one account to another? I have it set up where I can transfer (either online or with the ATM card) from checking to savings to cash reserve account. 2) Set up a small overdraft protection on account(s). Since I have had this feature, no more OD's. 3) Sounds like a rough week for you, with your dad being sick and all. Am sure this contributed to your distraction and oversight, so look forward now. Dont be discouraged. Each person who comes here has messed up on occasion. Whiz.

I agree. Everyone makes mistakes at some point on their accounts. I had never had an overdraft until this past summer when my 10 year old car died (on a 110 degree day with major humidity here in HotLanta(Atlanta)...what fun!), and my son and I had to wait over an hour to be rescued, and the four days following that debacle were spent dealing with mechanics and car salesman (once we knew the car couldn't be saved), and then the hassle of getting financing and new insurance, etc etc....and in all the chaos and worry about being approved for our car loan, I just simply forgot to record some charges in my checkbook. As a result, I depleted my checking account without knowing it. I didn't know it until I got the little postcard in the mail from the bank letting me know. I felt very bad about it. Coming here to the board and posting about it and having everyone tell me their experiences helped. I knew I wasn't alone. :-)

You might consider going into the bank, and talking face-to-face with a live person, explain the situation with your dad, and see if they will remove the fees - you had a mental hiccup in the face of your dad's serious situation - surely they can understand.

All my best,

Thanks for the advice. I think I will go to the bank and talk with them. I have bounced checks before, but I was a really long time ago, and considereing that my mortgage is with them, and I NEVER pay that late--maybe they will reverese some of the fees.. : ( I will keep you posted!

Thanks for the support. I need a lot of it lately, and this board definatley helps!!

Thanks again!!
