putting utilities in my children's name

I cannot get telephone service in my name because of a past due balance. Waaaaay more than I can afford to pay off. I am wondering if it is possible to put the service under my child's name and SS #. Does anyone know if this is illegal, and how much trouble I could get into?
Thanks!!
Thanks!!

IMO--I know they are your children, but it really is identity theft. What happens if you can't pay this bill and IT goes past due? Then your children have this with them, and 20 years from now when they move out...see what I mean? And the utilities would be entering into a contract of service with a minor, and they could shut it down if they realized what was going on, and you'd be out of luck either way!
As tempting as it may seem to do this, I wouldn't. I had a friend that had the same thing happen, but he still had a dial tone and could call out to local numbers only.(Universal Lifeline, I think it's called). When I had caller ID installed on our phone, his phone number came up, so we ended up having a number for him.
All the utility companies should be able to work with you--have you asked? Sometimes they want a high security deposit (from what I've heard--never been in this situation)for service to be turned on. If it's a phone, can you use pre-paid calling cards or pre-paid cell phone until things are better?
Hugs, and JUST MY OPINION!!
Kathy
I agree, i don't think you should do it. I would ask anyone else, your parents, your friend... anyone like that. (someone who would actually understand what you are talking about. Are you able to sign up for any energy assistance programs? I am sorry I don't have many suggestions for you.. good luck in whatever you decide.

My husband had phone bill problems before I met him. I noticed that the bill would have two amounts on it--one that was his balance, and another that said "pay this amount in order to avoid discontinuation of service"
Does your have these two amounts as well? If not call the phone co and ask them how much you need to pay to avoid interruption of service. Try to work out a payment plan with them. If you have not already, pare down to minimum service (no long distance, no caller id, no call waiting). Then use the phone only for local calls and emergencies.
They will not give phone service at that address to anyone w. the same last name as you until your account is up to date.
Good luck,
Alicia
