Update on my job offer situation

For those of you who read my "What would you do?" post a while back, I thought I'd fill everyone in on what we've decided so far. We still have plenty of time, but we have a plan of action for now.

Basically, dh and I are feeling more positive about the situation the more we think about it and listen for guidance. Our plan right now is to wait for the first of the year, and then to put together an "easy decision" list to present to my prospective employer. This would be the list of things that, if they were met, would make the decision a no-brainer and I would go work with him.

The "easy decision" list includes things like a $50k salary (so no pay cut, although our benefits would be more expensive and I wouldn't be able to freelance, so it would still be a net decrease in our expendable income), work-from-home Fridays, and a six-week trial period. Our plan is for dh to take a two week PTO at the beginning of the six-week trial period. During that time, he'll stay with the kids and decide if staying home with them full time is really something he wants to do. Meanwhile, I'll be deciding if going to work is really something I want to do. We'll keep it open so that either of us will feel free to say, "No, let's go back to the way things were" if we feel like it. After the two weeks PTO, the kids will stay with a trusted friend for a month. Two weeks before the end of the trial period, I will make my final decision and if I decide to go forward with the job, dh will turn in his two week notice.

One benefit of this plan is that the six week overlap in salary will allow us to pay off most, and possibly all, of our remaining debts, so that the net income cut won't hurt too much.

We're also selling my car and buying something less expensive, but we were thinking of doing that anyway.

So, that's it in a nutshell. Whatever happens will be for the best, I'm sure, so I'm not stressing about it for now. I am kind of nervous and excited at the same time, but I'm trying not to think about it much, especially because it's such a terribly long time away.

Thanks again for all the great input and ideas. Our plan was definitely informed and influenced by many of the terrific suggestions I received on this board. Thank you all so much!
