The tooth might not need a root canal if you get into the dentist fast enough. I broke a tooth in July (on a Tootsie Roll Pop), and they took me right in that same day. They built the tooth back up and placed a temporary crown on it, and then three weeks later, I got my real crown I believe the total cost was around $300. They should discuss prices with you ahead of time, but they should be able to at least build up the tooth to help you get through the holidays.
Speaking from experience, if you just chipped a tooth and go in right away, they may just be able to build it up and or just put a crown on it. Root canals are only needed when bacteria gets to the root and infects it. If you chipped a tooth in the past and waited 9 months, it's possible the root was exposed and became infected. I'd get in right away if I were you because it's way less expensive to get a crown versus a root canal treatment and a crown. Best of luck to you!
