Anyone having/going to parties?

Hi, everyone. Is anyone going to parties or having small get-togethers with family? I decided to skip the small work party, because we had a luncheon that week, and I was too exhausted (cooking, on-line shopping, tree-trimming with cats "helping", etc.). DH and I decided not to go to any parties this year. Am trying to watch weight, and have WAY overspent on holiday stuff already. Aereandel---just wondering--how were the parties? Are we party-poopers for not wanting to go to all this stuff? Whiz.

Nope, you're not alone. :-D We're skipping the parties this year. Our families live 800+ miles away, and there really aren't as many holiday parties this year. People just can't afford them....or they are like me, and just don't want to plan for them. LOL!

We're enjoying the holidays at home, just spending time together. :-D

Hey Whiz! I had two parties to go to, the first one was on Friday of last week and it was ok. I really enjoyed getting all dressed up, had my hair done, etc. Dinner was nice and there was a great band playing but overall the party was for my dbf's job and there were a lot of "stick in the mud" kind of people, lots of fake people with lots of money, you know what I mean? We just don't fit into that category, we are young and he is just starting out in this business so we're barely scraping by. It was more of a shmoozing party, kissing butt with the important people, lol. We did have fun though overall and had some nice photos taken of us. The other party I am going to is on Wednesday of this week and I am looking forward to that. It's for my job, and it's actually a company that dbf used to work for so he knows many of the people going. Many of my friends who are going are college age like me and we really let loose and have a good time. Open bar, have a room booked so I don't have to drive anywhere, great dinner, and great friends. It's really the company that you are with that makes these parties. lol. So the first one was ok, the next one should be really good.

I am kicking myself for the amount of money spent on these darn parties though so I can totally understand why you would opt not to go. Last month I spent 55 dollars to book a room for the second party. Then I spent about 100 on the dress, between shipping and everything. Then 100 on Friday to get my hair highlighted and in and updo, and probably another 50 on wednesday for another updo. So that's over 300 dollars spent on two nights of fun...definately not good. I have been lucky though and have managed to not put any of this on credit cards so I'm happy about that. I have had to shuffle a small amount from savings to cover this and I still need to figure out how to get some xmas presents for certain people but things aren't as bad as I thought it would be.

Hope everyone is making out well with saving money during the holidays...as you can see, I'm struggling! lol. I made my online cc payments though I still managed to snowflake about 80 dollars towards my two credit cards so that is good.

Hi, Aerandel. Sounds like the second party should be fun. Hey, you need to dress up at least once during the holidays, right? Congrats on not charging anything. Alas, I charged things on the cc, BUT, I paid off two MD bills and used my debit card for the rest. DH is having a party at work with his co-workers (during the day), and I didnt go to one party at work. We already had a huge Thanksgiving bash at work (food) AND another party at work (food again), so I have already spent way too much on cooking stuff, and have to watch the diet. LOL. Have fun, girlfriend. Whiz.

I remember when Christmas was all about parties and dressing up. I am not going to any parties this year, and I am so sad!

My BF doesn't like to drink anymore, and he just doesn't enjoy them so we just don't go.

He started a new job last week, so his company Christmas party has probably come and gone, and he said he wouldn't go anyway. My office has opted for a lunch this year. We usually go to dinner, but there were too many complaints (an office of only 7 people - sheesh!) no babysitter, nothing to wear etc. so it changed to lunch - oh well.

Our local gym has a Christmas party, but my BF managed to get us not to go to that one as well. He said he had to work the next day (Sat) and he didn't in the end, and we never went to the party.

It does make me a little sad and depressed. We have little to no family in the area, so no real plans for Christmas.

The closest thing I got to a party this year was a networking event. Wow - when did life get so dull!

Dh's x-mas party is on Saturday. I am so excited! Free Food, Open Bar, and a DJ to boot. My parents are keeping our son for the night. I did buy a new shirt $4.77 on clearance at JCPenny's for the event. My sister will do my hair and makeup. I will probbally buy DH a new shirt (on sale of course). So a pretty cheap night out for us.

No real holiday parties this year - DF and I are both standing in a wedding on New Year's Eve, and between my dress, his tux, the bridal shower, bachelorette, gifts, etc, etc, etc, we've already spent $600 on this thing. It's not even our wedding!!! Always think long and hard before accepting the position of bridesmaid....

Our company has a "year end" party in January, no Christmas party because the owners aren't Christian, and though the food and table wine is free, we each have to pay $10 towards door prizes, which are usually pretty crappy (this company is amazingly cheap!). DF and I decided to go this year though because we haven't gone in 3 years. People are starting to think we are antisocial! LOL.

We're hosting the neighborhood pot luck this year - but aside from cleaning the house and making some appetizer things, that's not such a big expense.

All my best,

Hi, Danni. Sounds like a fun gathering planned for Jan. In Jan, we have DH BD and our anniversary, so we try to keep it simple---a weekend get-away, or dinner out somewhere. A potluck sounds like fun, and less expensive. Do you just provide the main course, or appetizers and dessert? Back in my small town, they have progressive dinner parties this time of year---one house for cocktails and appetizers, another house for main course, third house for dessert and coffee, etc. Whiz.

My inlaws are away and my parents go to this restaurant every year so hopefully thats where new years eve will be. DH said his office didnt have a party this year but they had a small get-together at a Brazillian restaraunt in the city. Oops I forgot to ask him how much that cost, but i'm afraid to ask!!!! Iris
