New Year's Financial Resolutions?
| Mon, 12-12-2005 - 10:18pm |
Hi all. I'm trying to work out a financial plan for myself for 2006 and I wondered if any of you ladies have New Year's financial resolutions.
My financial resolutions for 2006 are:
1) GET MY CREDIT SCORE UP!
2) Pad my savings accounts to start building up an emergency fund and just have some extra put aside.
3) Make a budget and stick to it for good. This include pouring over statements, checking accounts very frequently, utilizing Microsoft money, etc.
4) Generally getting myself in much better financial shape.
5) NOT OVERDRAW MY CHECKING ACCOUNT ONCE!!!
Those are the ones that stick out the most in my mind right now. :) I have resolved to myself that I WILL and I MUST stick to those resolutions.
Cheers!

What a wonderful idea! I think I'm going to try it myself.
Thanks so much, Heather!

DH and I were just discussing this a few days ago. We feel our resolutions will be a work in progress but here is what we have so far:
1. No LATE FEES- I looked back at our utility bills and $10 bucks here $30 bucks there really adds up!!!
2. Pay off $5000 in debt by June 2006
3. Go on a family vacation (paid in cash of course) Est May 2006
4. Use Cash instead of our Debit card- We found through Finanical Peace University; we spend less when we have actual cash than swiping the card or writing a check
5. Prepare our Zero Based budget BEFORE we get paid- that way we won't wonder "where did the money go; we will know"
6. Update our insurance policies (life, auto and health) and have our Wills drawn up
7. Give generously; both money and time

My dh and I were given Dave Ramsey's book last year..I finally made myself read it. We went through Christmas using cash only. Wow, you tend not to spend as much. I think that his book is going to be our guidline for this year.
Our resolutions for 2006 are...
1. cash only as much as possible (there are just a few things we must use a check for)
2. stick to our zero balance budget
3. No new debt
4.work on this together!
#4 is a new one for us. It has been either me or him working on the bills...we have never worked on them consistantly together. I did make hime sit down and look at our financial picture..not pretty at the moment. Then I made him read the book...took awhile but he came back with wanting to do this together. So we sat down and worked on the numbers together. Came up with a budget together. And now plan to carry this out together.

These last 4 or 5 years my #1 resolution was always "lose 20 pounds". This year I finally lost 40. So I can put my finance management on #1 this year!
I plan to :
- go to my bank and ask for their program for web-based account management. So I'll have no excuses anymore for not knowing what's or what's not on my account (I plan to do that this week while I'm not working)
- every month spare 1/12 of all the invoices I have to pay in the year, so that there are no surprises any more and I don't spend money that I should keep for coming invoices!
- pay off my debit card by may (1250$, I get a bonus in may that i'm going to use for that)
- pay off my credit cards by September (1350$ and these I really have to spare)
- stop using my Visa like crazy, it's not because I pay it off the next month that I can spend 500$ on clothes without thinking!! I have to find other ways to cope with stress than retail therapy.
- cancel all my credit cards once they're paid off except the Visa for emergencies and for when I'm abroad
- start a special spare for retirement (it's in +35 years but I should think about it now)
- start sparing for things around the house or for my next computer
That's a lot of work already. But the most important thing, once this is done, is to buy myself a house. This is going to put me in more depbt for the 20 coming years LOL but this is more an investment. These last 6 years I have spent over 25.000 $ in renting a place and this money is lost forever. Once I buy, it's money I can get back when selling the house.
Resolutions 2006:
1 - maintain weight loss (1 year in March 2006)!
2 - eat out no more than 3-4 times a month
3 - continue debt repayment -19 mths to be debtfree
4 - continue building EF @ $200/mth - today total is $1400.00
5 - plan meals ahead & cook healthy & save $ on groceries
Here is to a great 2006 for everyone on the board!

I don't really have any money resolutions for 2006 - other than keeping our heads above water.

I saw a nicoderm commercial which I intend to borrow from. Take it one day at a time. I always make big plans and then can't live up to them. If I take it one day, one obstacle, one challenge at a time - I think I will be better able to work things out and less likely to give up.
Things I want to work on:
1. continue saving money
2. Use the freedom account correctly. Last year I was so afraid to take money from the savings account, I charged things which should have been paid for with F.A. money (like tires for the car)
3. stop using shopping as an emotional crutch. They say you shouldn't grocery shop when hungry. Well, I shouldn't go to the store at all (or go online, or look at a catalog) when depressed - or PMSy. Might seem logical, but for me it is something I realized over the past year and is a hard impulse to stop.
I actually paid off my credit cards last spring. I ran them up again in September. Same thing the year before. My Dad died a few years ago in September - three days after my birthday. I get crazy impulses that I never really had before. We need a new car. We need giant energy efficient washer & dryer. We need to go on an amazing vacation. Before my Dad died, we were pretty good. Paid off all the "growing up" debt (school, first house stuff, gotta have it stuff) and were decent with a budget. For the past few years, I go crazy in Sept & Oct. I am tired of losing a whole years progress in one month.
So my biggest resolution is to try to recognize what is going on before I run everything up and find a better way to deal. Its funny how clear everything is AFTER you run up the cards and are not depressed.
