On 12/30, my Dh and I, and our son, had gone to the library to pick up some books and videos, and then we went to the Home Improvement store to get some wood for one of DH's projects. On the way home, we stopped at the pool/tennis area in our neighborhood (since the parking lot was empty there), and my DH used the wood he'd gotten to set up little "ramps" for our son to drive his Remote Control Truck over. He used a 12pk of Coca-Cola to prop up one board, and he used a video cassette from the library to prop up the other. When we were finished with the truck driving, we gathered everything and put it back into our vehicle, and as I was turning off the toy truck to put it in, I said, outloud, "Don't forget the tape", but I never made sure He or my son had gone back for it. This evening (a full six days later), I took my son down to the parking lot again to drive his truck. It was late and getting dark, but I figured we could have fun by the overhead street lights for awhile before heading home. Well, we got back in the car, started to head out of the lot, and my headlights fell on an open, empty video cassette box sitting right in the middle of the parking lot!! I stopped and got out to grab it, and sure enough, it was the title we had rented!! DH had never put it back in the car before we left!! And now all I could find was the case! It was too dark by that point to search to see if the tape had been knocked out somewhere nearby, so I just drove home. I'll go down there tomorrow and see if I can find it by daylight, but if not, it looks like I'm going to have to pay the library for it. I've never had to pay for a lost item before, so I hope it's not too pricey. It was a tape on wood finishing, made in 1985, and was 30 minutes long. So hopefully it wasn't something expensive.
Just burns me up that this happened, though.
Pat

I know how you feel!!
Once---when I was single, I rented a movie from the video store. My German Shepherd chewed the tape up. It cost me $75. That was about 13 years ago. Not even a very good movie---"Outbreak".

Oh, I'd be so mad. Recently our dog chewed a library book. He has his behavior issues, but chewing things isn't one of them. And we have books everywhere and never touched one before. We think he chose a library book because it must have smelled good, having so many different people and places marinated into it!
The price inside the cover was $12. However, apparently after X amount of checkouts, they start taking $$ off of replacement charges. The book was 6 years old, and popular (a magic treehouse book) and I only had to pay $4. I'll cross my fingers for you!
Update: I drove down to the pool/tennis area at 8am this morning, and there was no tape to be found. I kind of thought it would be gone. DH thinks it will be very expensive, but I'll have to wait and find out. Ds and I are going to the library this afternoon to pay for it. I've already told Dh, "No more making ramps out of library materials!" LOL!

Hey Pat - sorry to hear that - that really stinks.
All my best,
Danni
Pat,
I work in a library, and am the one responsible for purchasing all the books, tapes, etc. I tell our patrons who are in the same boat as you are that if they want to purchase a replacement for the damaged item themselves, I will waive the processing fees, or if they'd rather, I can get it with all of my nifty discounts and they can pay what I paid.
One of the places that I use to find older things is either amazon.com or half.com. It's amazing what can be found used!
Good luck with that (even as I was wincing about him using the video tape as a ramp, lol)

I went to the library, and they were very nice about it. Whew. I still had to pay, but at least I didn't get yelled at. LOL! I had to pay $30.00 for the lost tape, but they told me to hold onto my receipt, and if I locate the tape in the next 90 days, I can get my money back, even if it's damaged. I'm just glad it's over. I looked at Amazon.com and Ebay to try and find a replacement for less than $30, but I couldn't locate one. I guess it's an expensive lesson learned. :-)
