Talk about Busting the E-Fund. *UGH*

First off - let me just say that I am determined to be completely optimistic about the circumstances here - but talk about Murphy raining down a crud storm on us right now!
- Need New Roof on Dormers ($2400) plus the cost of repairing the interior due to water damage
- Car windshield was cracked in wind storm this week (no idea the cost of replacing a windshield - maybe $700?)
- DH's laptop computer broke last night.

Uh, for rebuilding your emergency fund, apparently, LOL!
Sorry, Danni, it's not funny (well, except in that *special* Murphy way, if you catch my drift...), and I'm hoping that it will all work itself out well in the end.
Man, you need to buy some "Murphy-repellant" while you're getting stuff for your roof. Maybe it's sold on E-bay...
Good luck,
~Lisa
Ugh!! I'm sorry, I am having similar issues on a smaller scale without the E-Fund.
All I can offer is something someone shared with me that states exactly how I feel: When everything's coming your way, you're in the wrong lane!
And apparently we are stuck in a serious traffic jam!
Danni,
Sometimes life just stinks! My mom always says that life is peaks and valleys, so let's assume that you're in a valley and things can only get better! Sometimes it seems as though it's one step forward and two steps back. Best of luck to you.
Does your car insurance cover windshield replacement? We have Allstate, and we have had three windshields replaced for only $50. Two were replaced in our driveway, and one was replaced at Dh's office parking deck.
Pat
I was going to suggest the same about the windshield. Check to see if one is offered through your insurance. I have had Farmers for just over a year, and I have just been told I can get a new windshield at no cost.
So sorry to hear about all that is happening. It is not only taxing on a budget, but taxing on you mentally. I remember when I went through all the problems with my windows - it was a nightmare. I ended up spending $500 more than expected for those also. I do agree that the house is first.
I can also sympathise w/ your H's tooth. I had a broken crown that needed the tooth finally pulled and replaced with a titanium implant. It has cost me $4200 plus all the prescriptions during the procedures. And I go to the dentist's every 6 months - and always have! I still have a few procedures before it is all finished.
I am still staring at a $4000 repair for the sliding doors in my bedroom. Nothing is currently wrong with them, but we have been mandated by the condo association to repair those. Can you believe a $4000 repair with nothing wrong? They already had me replace my front door, which they then said was fine. And I have been through 2 storm doors in 2 years. It's currently broken - and it's new!
Homes can be draining on the pocket! I hope all goes well. Knowing you Danni, you will see the positive in it all.
Hello Danni,
I understand your frustration with draining that emergency fund. When my husband was laid off last September, several large expenses hit just afterward. Luckily, I had spent August & July filling up the emergency fund. We had two months warning of his layoff, which was generous, and a severance check.
So, what large expenses hit in October?
Driver's Seat Base broke: $700
Hailstorm damage on roof: $500
Furnace Repair, Broken Fan: $400
Toilet Seat Broke (Twice): $100
--------------------------------
Total: $1700
Basically, we emptied almost all of the emergency fund paying for these repairs. However, since I had just filled up the emergency fund, I didn't have to incur extra debt in order to pay for these expenses.
Just a few days ago, I set up a freedom account for each of these expenses:
Christmas 2006
Italy Trip 2006
Auto Insurance
Auto Maintenance
Home Maintenance
I'm hoping that if I fill these freedom funds slowly with automatic withdrawals on payday, I won't have to use our emergency fund unless it's truly an unplanned emergency. Some of the above expenses from last year would have been paid from freedom accounts if we had them. =) The Italy trip is getting just $10 a month until the others are full. I'm aiming to fill them in 6 months instead of 12 months, so I'll be able to redirect money to the Italy trip without feeling I could have used the money elsewhere.
Sincerely,
Lindsey Schocke

Dear Danni,
I can feel your pain!!!! You're not alone....I have had a very expenive week last week myself. I had to spend over $2000 on dental and eyeglasses. Some of it I had to charge...OWWWWW!!!!!! Paying for the dental work was more painful than the procedure.
The winter always seems to be the worst financial time for me. Cabin fever and bad finances are my bad combination. I am trying to calm down and figure out a way to get thru the winter without going crazy and feeling deprived as I work on paying all this back to myself. (I have lots to do and know I can keep myself busy here and try to ignore it, but then there are times I just need out of the house.....and it always seems to cost me!)
My emergency fund has shrunk A LOT this past week.............I have to figure out how to put it all back....and then save some more. BUT I was so glad to have that emergency fund!!!!!!
Hang in there! Bad luck seems to come in clumps, but we'll figure it out. I'm taking a lot of deep breaths, too.
Best wishes, Littlesbigs
Oh, Danni, that really stinks!!! Any of those things by themselves would be stressful, but all together?? UGH!! I'm so sorry!
I have no good advice, except to take them one at a time and try not to get discouraged. Unfortunately, there will always be these types of things coming up in all our lives; it just seems so much harder when we're already in a difficult financial position. Just know that you have a group ready to support you or just give you a chance to vent when necessary!!
(((Hugs)))
