direct deposit

When my husband gets his disability sent to Germany, we'll have to send my Mother-in-Law $100 to pay off his medical bills. Western Union is way too expensive and there is no citibank branch where they live. Here in Germany, I can direct deposit and automatically transfer money to any bank I would like to in Germany and probably the rest of Europe. My question is, does anyone know, if all banks in the US have direct deposit as well? If so, then I'll transfer money from the citibank (where we will have my husband's account, cause it is the cheapest) right into my mother-in-laws account, without any hassle and hopefully without much extra cost. I'd appreciate some advice and/or information on this, or maybe another cheap solution. Western Union is just too expensive.

If I understand your question correctly, you and DH are in Germany and your MIL is in the US and you are trying to get $100 to her. Is that right? All banks and most credit unions have the capacity for direct deposit and/or electronic funds transfers (wires). To send a wire you'll need your MIL's bank name, routing number and account number. These can be found on the bottom of her CHECKS (not deposit slip-they can have a different internal routing number). A wire transfer is usually inexpensive depending on your bank ($10-$50) if they are both US banks. If you are transferring internationally (i.e. German Bank to US Citibank- that will probably be more expensive- the range of $50-$100). Is your MIL in dire need of the $100? The cheapest way to send money is to send her a check from your bank account. Since it's $100 her bank should not put a hold on it and she would have access to the funds.

I hope that helps.
