Starting to clean out the dresser...

I am convinced that I have a ton of stuff I bought and forgot about over the years.....put away somewhere in this tiny apartment of mine and never used......so I am taking the time today to find some of it......I need to see what I charged and spent on that has lead to the debt point I am at right now.
A few minutes ago, I dug a couple VERY NICE items out of the top drawer of my dresser in the bedroom...perfume, jewelry, toilietries....very nice stuff! Yes,I had forgotten I had them.......this is not good. I have too much stuff....and if I needed something similar, I would have never remembered I had it and just bought it again.....my money wasted...
I also have a request from someone to donate some stuff to charity, so I am finding little things in that top drawer that I will probably never use, too...so far I have put in the donation bag a watch I got as a gift several years ago that I will probably never wear....
I am going to pull that drawer out and go thru it bit by bit...it's loaded with stuff. I think that is my afternoon today. There are a lot of very nice things in that drawer....I am seeing what I have been spending my money on....

Still going thru the drawer and finding a lot of "extra" buttons attached to clothes tags for all those suits and blouses I bought....Do I still have any of them? Am I still paying for them?
I have added more jewelry to the charity bag....finding receipts for stuff I don't remember buying....wow..............
That drawer has a lot of stuff in it.....and then I'll tackle the one below it.....
By the way, I found the bundle of credit cards in that drawer that I no longer carry and no longer use.......................that is good!
Updates later................
I'm learning something here..............

Hi Littlesbigs:)

Good for you!
Have you concidered reselling these items through a local consignment store to get back some of the money that you spent? Of course, they wont take all of it, but what is leftover you could give to a charity of choice.
Good job, and keep up the hard work!

Man do I know that feeling. I am going through my apartment right now too. And I can not believe the stuff I had tucked away that I had forgotten about buying. Right now I'm selling off a bunch of Books, DVDs, VHS, and CDs which is helping make a little of the money back I've thrown away on these things over the years.
Back in December I went through my dresser and wound up taking three trash bags full of clothes and donated them. It was redicilous. I still need to go through it and my closet again and get rid of more. How many t-shirts does one woman need? I hardly ever wear most of them and they are just cluttering up the space. I'm going to hang onto everything from this purge though until May or so. My mother and I are having large garage sale in May and I will try to unload some of this stuff then anything that doesn't sell we'll donate.
I haven't even started in the kitchen, or bathroom yet. Who knows what's below the sinks and tucked away in the cabinets. I also need to go through the jewelry box, and a couple of hall closets. Plus I still have more books, DVDs, VHS and CDs to list.
What was a thinking buying all this stuff? Half of it I've never used or only used once. If nothing else, this has been a great learning experience and has taught me that I need to question everything that I buy. I've just taken the stance that I refuse to buy anything that is going to just sit around a clutter up my life anymore. Pareing down it making me very happy though suddenly I have a lot more space and can actually see the things that I do use and love.
Hello,
Good luck on the decluttering! I use Its Deductible in addition to Turbotax to record my donations. Its Deductible gives you a "fair market value" for the item that you can add to your tax information. It's great! Anyway, I have a higher state refund this year because of donating old clothes I don't wear anymore. I just kept a log of what I donated, entered it into Its Deductible online, and transferred the info to Turbotax online.
Sincerely,
Lindsey Schocke
