Took Jeep in for repair...$1995--

Well, our 1996 Jeep w/ 137,000+ miles on it was making a grinding noise from underneath which we found out today was the differential blah, blah, blah, transmission stuff. It needs replaced and IF the axles are still good it'll be 1995--if not, it'll be more. Plus--I can smell gasoline when the tank is full (they checked no hole,no leak, no evidence of a leak). There's other odds and ends wrong w/ it. My dh and I were prepared to spend about $500-$800 and keep it but we said we'd cut it off at $1000--well their estimate surpassed what we were willing to spend. And it's going to cost us $70 for all their work. We've been wanting a minivan since we had our 3rd in 2005 so I guess we'll be shopping for one. I hate the idea of a car payment. It just sucks. On the other hand, it'd be nice to have something newer (bigger) so I'm not freaked out every time we go somewhere in it. We also have a 1994 Saturn which needs some maintenace done.Grrr...I told the mechanic "Um, NO" that's money for a down payment...He sorta agreed w/ me then he goes, "plus you still got the 137,000 miles on it" Actually I think it has all kinds of problems. sheesh..

I was in the same situation last Summer. I had a '95 Chevy Cavalier that had 100K miles on it. The A/C had stopped working about three summers ago, and for those of you in the Southeast, you know how bad it is to not have Air Conditioning on a hot, humid, summer day! My husband had been insisting we needed a new car, but I just couldn't bear the thought of having another car payment. We had just paid his car off, and I didn't want to take on another so soon. So I did my best to keep it running. Sure, it would die every few months...sometimes if I was lucky, it would conk out in a parking lot where it could be towed without too much trouble. Other times, it would conk out right in a busy intersection, and that was humiliating. It finally came down to the last breakdown. It was a hot day with a heat index of 110. My son and I had gone out to run a few quick errands, when the engine started to conk out. I managed to make it to the side of the road with no problem, but I was in the middle of nowhere. The tow company would take 45 minutes to get there, and my husband also would take 45 minutes to get to us. We were stranded. Too dangerous to walk, but very uncomfy there in the hot car also. By the time my husband arrived, the first words out of his mouth were, "Honey, we NEED to get you a new car." The cost of fixing all the problems on it would have been more than the car was worth.
I'm not thrilled about having payments each month, BUT....I am enjoying the security of having a safe vehicle with roadside assistance and Onstar available for me if I should ever need it.
Sometimes it just has to be done. The peace of mind is worth it. Have fun shopping for your next vehicle!

That's kinda the boat I'm in now. I know the car isn't worth much more that a few thousand at this point anyhow. I usually drive locally but w/ my kids in tow so I'm always nervous that I'm gonna breakdown somewhere. Then we travel every 3 months or so (a 4.5 hr trip) so I'm not willing to breakdown on the highway. Also--the mechanic told me that when it does go out--it'll just stop he said. Yeah, that'd suck. I'm looking at some used minivans online right now. So we'll see....we'll probably have something new (or new to us) within a couple of weeks.
