urgh! just when i thought we were finally going to get ahead of this ever mounting stack of bills, all heck breaks loose! we were about to send our first payment to credit counseling this week... after bringing a few cards current. We are waiting on a tax return of 780 dollars that has not arrived. That 780 was going to bring the cards current, pay for car registration for our 2 cars, and the first payment to credit counseling.

Oh Kel what a bummer. Later you will see it as a bump altho now it is a mountain. Someone said that Murphy's law always kicks in when you are trying to get a plan in place to manage debt. How true that seems!! Hopefully there aren't too many breaks in the pipe and your DH will be able to do this without a huge amount of $$$. In Calif we can pay the car registration when it is due in order to not get hit with penalties, but they won't actually issue the registration until smog inspection or whatever is verified. So maybe that is available where you live?? I know it seems like we make progress with such little steps, but eventually they will pay off. Hang on and (((HUGS)))

Hello,

I know how hard it is when you are trying so hard to get current and don't have anything extra when you have an emergency. Have you considered cancelling your verizon wireless account? Could you find something to sell on ebay or in a quick garage sale? Do you have neighbors with children who you could babysit for a few hours? Would your homeowner's insurance cover a sewer problem?

I would definitely *call* your creditors and let them know that you are having problems making the payments this month. It's possible you could be given some options you weren't aware of.

I have done some part-time work from home (on the phone and using the computer) for "West at Home". If you do a search on google for "West at Home Agent", you can interview for a position with that company. Basically, you'd be taking orders from those 800 numbers listed on the Home Shopping Network and infomercials. Your phone number is not given out, but the calls are routed to you. I have done this for 30 minutes here, an hour there, and enjoyed knowing exactly how much I would get paid for the work ahead of time. Anyway, it's just a suggestion for some work from home that you could do on a weekend or evening to bring in a little extra money.

Sincerely,
Lindsey Schocke

Do not give up!!!! You are having a setback, and we all have them! Your setback is coming just as you are starting, and that is okay...keep trying to do what you can to hang in there. This inconvenience will pass. You will think of a way to deal with it and move on. If things get a little worse before they get better, well, it happens! Don't give up the spirit! You will be able to begin your debt reduction journey, you just may be held up by these inconvieniences for a little while, but you can keep working on your plan everyday. You can do some planning, make some changes....

Hang in there, Kel!!!!! I'm cheering for you! Littlebigs

Just so everyone knows if you have an old cell phone, but no provider,it will still dial 911. Just one way to go without the cell phone bill if you keep a phone just for emergencies.

May I ask you a question? Why are you putting yourself through this? You know that you don't get a prize for the most suffering right? Do you know that there are laws in the country that give protection and relief to people who are suffering just like you are. It's called Bankruptcy and it's not a dirty four letter word. It's your right under the laws of this country to gain relief to living a life not much worth living as is.

Do you know that banktupcy is LESS of a hit to your credit rating than going to Consumer credit counseling serices? It is. Credit counseling, where you make your payments, makes a larger ding in your credit score than filing bankrupcty. You don't get brnaded a failure, your score will not hit bottom and stay there for 7 years. These are all myths. Please come to the Debt Q&A board right here at ivillage and ask questions.

I know this sounds like a sales pitch and it's NOT. Please consider this as a viable option. We deal with all these issues and more over at the Debt Q&A board where the Bankrupcty Q&A board has been relocated. I hate to see anyone suffering through what I went through before I wised up and filed for protection from my creditors. I now am relaxed and calm, no more trips to the ER because of sky high stress related blood pressure, that I couldn't pay for by the way! I pay all my bills, I have spending money to enjoy my hobbies, I go to dinner, I ENJOY my life. I don't exist miserably. I feel so sorry for you. You sound as if you have tried everything and are still getting slapped down at every turn. PLEASE, you have looked at your options but you forgot the best one. Call a few Bankruptcy attorneys and go see them for a FREE consultation. They won't charge a thing and you will see what your options are.

I hate to see anyone feel so beaten down my life. Please take care of yourself. Join us at the Debt Q&A board, right here at ivillage.

hmm... I'm having a hard time with this. When I first read your response, sweetpea, i've got to say it kind of felt like an attack. I am sure you did not intend it that way, and i know that you are trying to help. of course, i am not trying to get the prize for the most "sufferering". I am simply posting about a setback we had. I thought that that was what this board was for. your post kind of made me feel like you think I am being whiny.

I am glad that bankrupcy was an option for you. It is not for me. I explained in another post that we have to keep our credit in good standing because of my husband's job.

kel,
Do you want to post your budget and maybe we can all help you sort it out?

Also Septic tanks should be pumped at least every other year.

Cartainly bankrutcy isn't an option for everyone, but it is an option. That's all I was trying to say.

Nothing in my post was meant to make you feel worse and I am sorry if it came across that way. I was attempting to make you feel better. I guess I missed on that point. All I was trying to do was say I understood abot how hard it is to go through this. You sounded so beaten down and frustrated. No problem if you aren't. I just wanted you, and others who might read the post to understand that there are options.

Please also understand that bankruptcy isn't a quick fix. It's hell to go through and everyone who goes through it has learned a very valuable lesson. As well as how to budget and remain debt free for years to come. Everyone of us who have been forced to use this protection has done so after serious thought.

You are right that in most cases you can do just as good of a job lowering your rates than CCC can. That would be a good thing to continue trying to do. I'm glad that it's working.

Ouch. Another bump in the road.

Have you ever read Bridget Jones' Diary? There is a bit in it where her friend tells her about this book in which the author describes hard times as being in the center of a spiral seashell. When you start to move away from the problem, you keep coming back to this rough patch. But as you keep moving away from the middle, it is longer and longer before you come back to the rough patch, and eventually you move all the way out of the shell.

Anywa, I hope that your other cards will work with you.
