Were you pushed into this?

Here's a question to ponder: Did you start your debt reduction journey as your own decision, or were you pushed into it by someone else (other than the debt collectors or credit card company/student loan company/loan company/etc.?) like a spouse, family member or friend or even a financial advisor? If so, do you really feel on board with it, or are you resisting it? Has the push been upsetting or inspirational? Would you have done this on your own?

Hello,
I was given control of the checkbook and budget when I asked for it several years ago. I started managing the money because we had bounced a check and my DH and I really needed some consistency on who was spending what. =)
It was a little scary handling all of the bills for a few months (since we were living paycheck to paycheck and scraping by) but slowly, we were able to get current on some bills and make headway. Now, I consider it a game to see how quickly I can pay off debt. My DH is actually getting a little worried that I focus on money *too* much.
Sincerely,
Lindsey Schocke

LOL Nope! Got myself in this mess and that darn Prince Charming hasn't shown up to bail me outta it so I guess I'll have to get myself out! Of course, all those years I wasn't paying a lick of attention to what was going on financially (beyond making sure the bills were paid on time and at least taking advantage of 401k matches), I told myself "I'm the only one that will have to live with whatever consequences". Well, that was true but why do I always take better care of other people than myself? I'm getting a lot better about that but it is a recurring theme in my life and I'm sure if someone else (spouse or children) had been in the picture, I would've been much more attentive.
Anyway, I will get it done. Was just playing with the numbers tonight and there's no reason I can't be free of this consumer debt by the end of the year.

My hubby and I definatly made the decision together to pay off our debt. I'm probably more into then he is but he's getting there. He sees me not buy stuff for myself for buying sake and has really cut down on his own spending. It's nice to have us work together on this and already this year, I think we've made a lot of progress. It was even my hubby who paid off our van when we got our tax return. Right when we found it was deposited into our account, my hubby called our credit union to pay off our van. This is soooooo NOT typical of him, tax return money is normally spent on our wants. I know that we will have our ups and downs with paying our debt off but right now we are both feeling excited about paying it off.

I chose this path...I saw people around me having major finance trouble & realized that with some bad luck we could be right in their shoes. Scared me right into it...it takes time but changing our bad habits & getting on the debt reduction program has given me great peace of mind.
Have a good day!

But now he's pretty much on board. He thinks I'm a bit odd about how I'm approaching it, but he's doing pretty odd things too - he has this odd theory that we can not buy any groceries for two weeks, and that will save us money. Ummm...have you heard of these green leafy things called vegetables? He was going to live off of meat, rice and bread for two weeks. Men are weird. (Or maybe it's just my DH, and i married the only weird one. I'll never know).
I started my debt journey on my own, but it was just so hard, initially, doing it without support from my husband. It wasn't that he didn't care. He just didn't know about it! LOL! Now that he's fully aware of where we stand financially, the journey has become SO much easier. When we want to make an unplanned purchase (a video game or a DVD that we don't really need), we can talk about it and see where we could make up the money (cutting out our sodas at the grocery store for a week and maybe avoid one lunch out at work for DH). We're a team now, and that makes it so much easier.
I am very on board with the paying off of my credit card. It is our last major debt, other than our house and car. Our car has a very low interest rate, and it's only a 3 year loan, so I'm not concerned about that one. I will pay that one off at the normal speed. Our house has 14 1/2 years left at 5.375%. Once our card is paid off, I plan to fully fund our 401K and purchase my husband's stock options. Naturally, it will take time to do, but I'm so anxious to achieve this goal that I'm willing to cut back on things and repair things to make them last longer, just to save money. :-D
