Hi, all. I know there was a recent discussion about trying to teach young women and especially, kids, the value of $$, saving, etc. Have any of you ever been to seminars, classes, geared toward women and savings, investing, etc.? Investment clubs--I dont hear much about them anymore, but one woman I used to work with is taking a financial class about stocks, etc. Anyone every do this? Did it help? WHo taught it? Thanks. Whiz.

I haven't been to anything like this, but I've seen them offered through Adult and Continuing education centres around here. Check with your local high schools or community colleges, and see if they offer anything like this. The ones I've seen were usually free.

Whiz,
I have been reading some of David Bach's work and he has a book called Smart Women Finish Rich. I haven't actually read the whole book (read a good chunk in a bookstore) but he does have some seminars I would love to attend. Unfortunately they won't be in my area anytime soon but they might be in yours. His site is finishrich.com.

I know that our local community college has basic financial management courses and basic investing classes. We also have a private continuing education school that offers reasonably priced classes and they have 2-3 pages of money classes every catalog and some are focused on women.

I've been looking for an investment club forever. Seems like you either need to know someone in one to get an invite or be willing to start your own.

HTH!

The company my financial planner works for has held a couple of seminars at a lunch time and in the evening discussing different investment issues specifically for women. They even gave a free book about investing for women. They were free to attend, and provided a free lunch as well. They have been excellent. Just as aheads up the company is Mass Mutual. I would call your local office and see if they are having any.

Hi, PEg. Thanks for this information on the book. Do you just order online (i.e., AMazon?) Thanks Whiz.

Yep, it's a current publication so it will be at Amazon or BN but you should look around to see if you can find a used copy. I use www.campus1.com to look for books I'm interested in purchasing used. I just pulled this one up and there aren't any super bargains but there are several that are about 1/2 of the regular price.

Also, my library system has a couple copies but they were both checked out and I just haven't messed with putting them on hold yet.

Hi Whiz,

I attended a "Smart Women Finish Rich" workshop sponsored by my bank's Investment/Financial division. It was in the evening, women only, great food and wine. After the presentation (which included a SWFR workbook) they "raffled" 3 copies of the book. This was the first time I had heard of David Bach and I really enjoyed the simplicity of the information. I would check with your local Chamber of Commerce to see if they know of a workshop in your area or could refer you to a local investment company. You can also check out David Bach's website at http://www.finishrichmedia.com/live_events/seminars_women.php or www.davidbach.com to see where a seminar may be in your area. Let us know what you find out.

Susan

Hi, Susan--Hey, thanks for the info. I was looking at "Rich Dad, Poor Dad", but I am really interested in women's financial challenges, and I am glad you gave suggestions. It seems women have unique $$$ issues in addition to all of the daily mess--i.e., we live longer, earn less money than men (still!), have more health issues, etc. Appreciate it. WHiz.
