So I took the trigger store challenge and it is working!! I didn't go over my budget this first pay period and I didn't have to do any shuffling of funds to cover an "emergency" outfit for the kids. They always get me by having girls clothes at the front of the store....

I am so happy I could just scream....

Hello,

Congratulations on staying away from your triggers! It's so much easier to say "no" to extra spending if you say "no" to visiting the store in the first place. =)

I've managed to stay away from Walmart completely. Even today, I was thinking that our son needed some new educational software, and the cheapest place to buy it would have been Walmart...but then I stopped myself and remembered that our library has educational software for FREE! :-D We can keep it for three weeks, and then if no one has requested it, we can renew it for an additional 3 weeks. Not bad for free! :-D

Pat - I *love* the library for that reason!

Hello,

My DH has different target stores than I do. His would be electronics & music stores, such as Best Buy, Circuit City, Radio Shack, or Brandsmart USA. My DH is unable to visit these type of stores and walk out with just the item he was looking for. =) Recently, we stopped at Brandsmart USA to get some headphones, and DH wanted to get a shopping card.

I stopped, looked at him, and said "That's a really big pair of headphones if you need a whole cart to carry them!" He laughed and said he was expecting to shop a little. I started quizzing him on what we really *needed* and he didn't really have anything pressing to buy. He still picked up a few things he was interested in getting, but I asked him to put them back. We walked out with an inexpensive set of headphones for his MP3 player (which he uses *constantly*) and that purchase was discounted too. The cashier actually said to us "That's all you're getting?" when we checked out. She laughed it off like it was a joke, but I was not amused.

Total spent: $12
Normally spend: $100+

I have target stores as well. Bookstores, consignment shops, and any place that sells home decorations or organizing supplies, such as Linens N Things or the Container Store / IKEA are a weakness for me.

I recently went to the Container store to get some additional spice jars & a rack for pot lids. I walked out with exactly what I planned to buy, but spent 45 minutes picking up things and then forcing myself to put them back.

Total spent: $10
Normally spend: $50+

Staying away from the stores really helps. Going in with a list and forcing myself to get only what's on the list (while making a wish list for later) also works. If I make the wish list and two weeks have passed and I *still* want the item, I'll save up for it and then head back to get it. =)

Sincerely,
Lindsey Schocke
