I am so angry right now I can barely think!
Through a delayed bonus from work, and a great income tax refund, I was able to put an extra $815 on my provincial student loan this month (normal payment is $85/month, this month I paid $900).
Well, it's been a week, so I thought I would check my new balance online just to get the emotional gratification of seeing that $6000 balance shrink to almost $5000. Well... they only posted a regular payment of $85!!!!!!!!!!!
This particular institution has given me NOTHING but grief since I've been in re-payment - since 1999. They are the most incompetent, inept, useless, hopeless bunch of bungling nincompoops I have ever had the displeasure of dealing with. It is a constant, never-ending battle - it seems every few months I have some sort of problem with them. The last time I posted about them, I was so angry and emotional that my post was deleted - either iVillage didn't like my naming the institution, or I got a little carried away with my language. I don't remember.
I'm at work right now and I am seeing so much red I can't even concentrate. I can't call them until I get home - I share an office and I don't want my co-workers overhearing this. Besides - I need time to calm down.
Someone please wish me luck!!!!!

Calm down.
Were you able to straighten this out yet? I'm hoping that they will see it was just an error and change the amount of your payment without too much hassle. If not, just send them a copy of your cancelled check, and that should clear it up.
Keeping my fingers crossed!
Pat :-D

Hi Kelly - I'm so glad to know that it all got straightened out.
All my best,
Danni
My anger/irritation/annoyance meter can go from zero to a million and one in about 3 seconds - I've always been that way. Fortunately it can usually go back down to zero in about the same amount of time. Things usually work out when I just calm down - it's just with this particular institution, the last time I had a problem with them, it took WEEKS to straighten it out - I tried to set up automatic payments and they ended up taking TWO payments in one month out of my account - resulting in a chain reaction causing a couple of bounced checks, a late payment on my rent, and a lot of crying! The whole thing was 100% THEIR fault - so after that experience you can see why I immediately feared the worst this time around.
Unfortunately I'm stuck with them until this thing is paid off - you can't transfer government student loans to another financial institution here in Canada. ***Sigh*** - only $9500 to go on the federal loan, and $5144 to go on the provincial!

Government student loans here in Canada are probably done quite differently than in the US. Prior to 2001, you had your loan financed through one of the major national banks - so I took mine to my own bank where I had a checking account. After 2001, they started being financed directly through the government, so you didn't have to go through a bank anymore. However, those people who had loans already negotiated through the banks, like me, stayed with the banks.
Well it's been one nightmare after another with these guys - two years ago I even closed my checking account with them and went to another bank. Too bad I couldn't take my loans with me!
