I'm new here...been lurking for awhile though...

I'm working on paying off 2 credit cards (have paid off 2 small ones this year), I'm finally on a budget and have only charged 1 item since 1/1/2006! Today, I also joined my the 401K at work...I'm only contributing a small amount and I probably should have started awhile ago, but I guess every little bit helps.

Hope to be debt free by June 2007.

Hi, DFS--Congrats on joining your 401K at work. Do they match any of it? You are starting on the right path and sound disciplined and determined. Share your successes with us, and a great way to start off right. Whiz:)

They match, but only after a year. Hopefully, I'll be able to increase my contributions in the future.

Hello,

Congratulations on paying off some of those credit cards!

Once your employer starts matching, I would suggest raising the contribution level to the maximum that your employer matches (in my case, 6%). My 401k plan has a setting that lets me say "Raise the percentage automatically" on a certain date. I can plan on getting a small cost of living raise every year, (plus any raise I get for good performance) so I set my 401K to increase 2% in mid-March, when the increased salary shows up in my paycheck. If your 401k plan offers this option, you may want to use it. Having the percentage go up automatically makes it easy to "set it and forget it".

Sincerely,
Lindsey Schocke
