Lazy sunday--trying to recoup-bad skin

Hi, all. Well, I took a few days off. Am just beside myself with all the dissing and hissing (work--new computers coming up soon), and skin that looks like an elephant's behind, that I slept in. DH did ALL of the laundry, made breakfast, did dishes, put everything away, etc. He even cleaned the bathroom. My hands are covered in bandaids (Mummy Returns) and enough goop to look like Crisco. Fry me up. Ladies, I need help. Doc is on vacation, and I dont know what else I can put on my skin. Ideas? Thanks. WHiz.

Hi. Its a little green square container and it says bag balm on the side. They originally used it for cows utters when they were really raw. Any drug store has it but I cant remember what aisle. I looks like vaseline. My husband also uses it on his dry feet and his bad dry hands. I hope that helps. If you ask someone who works there they will know what it is. Leanne

Hey Whiz, I bet it is the alcohol. I know my hands have been the worst this year when I've been using the hand sanitizer more often. The Nexcare stuff you just paint on and leave to dry. It has a protective barrier in it, but it helps stuff heal too. It is non-prescription. It seemed a better buy than the liquid bandage stuff beacuse with that, it comes in applicator tubes that get used up quickly. My bottle of Skin Crack Care is still half full, and I used it all winter. You are dipping the brush into the same bottle all of the time, but if you don't share with anyone, I think it would be sanitary (kind of like makeup, maybe).

Hi, Sarah and Leanne--Thanks for the description. WEll, I went to the drug store. Maybe I looked in the wrong place (lotions), but I asked the sales clerk. I found Berts' Bees for hands---choice of almond or banana. I chose the almond. Next, I got a trial size (small size) of the Norwegian Formula hand cream. Went to band-aid section, looking for the paint-on stuff, and the green bottle of the udder balm. Couldnt find it. Found hydrocortisone-type stuff in tube. Will go there again tomorrow, as they were closing, and keep looking. THanks everyone. Whiz. :)

Be careful with the hydrocortisone -- it can thin your skin, making it more susceptible to irritation (if you overuse it). I used to wash dishes in a shop, and my hands would get really stripped with the industrial soap. What worked for me was using pure oil (like olive oil) at night and a heavy hand cream (I like the Body Shop's hand creams with silicone. It's expensive, but a tube lasts a long time.) It takes a while, but I liked it. Also, you may not need the hand sanitizer (unless you can't get to a sink). Soap and water (not the antibacterial kind, because you don't want to make antibiotic resistant germs) work just as well for killing germs and is less drying. :)

Hi, KB--Thanks for the reminder on the Hydrocortisone cream thing. Havent tried silicone creams yet. DH used to use silicone to patch up leaks--makes sense. I slathered on the Norwegian cream--it is very thick, a little goes a long way--and it did seem to take the sting away. Am going to keep experimenting. Appreciate your reply :) Whiz.

Hey whiz,

From the nursing corner, here are my favorite hand creams:

Avon "Silicone Glove" (you can sometimes get 3 tubes for $5 on the avon website)

Gold Bond "ultimate healing" (7.99 range)

Johnson's "softcream extra care" (yellow tube) (4.99 range)

Nexcare (the brush on crack stuff) also makes a moisturizing hand sanitizer (8.99 for a large pump bottle)...I buy this because the stuff they supply us w/ at work peels the skin right off my hands.

Whiz,
Most drugstores around here (Walgreen, CVS) take back cosmetics with reciept if you don't like them, I would assume lotions, hand creams, etc would also be returnable. As for the bag balm look near the infant stuff. Lots of new mothers use it if nursing, I think it has lanolin in it. It's in a green tin. There is another one called udder cream I think that is in black and white tube type packaging like a cow print that is supposed to do the same thing.
Good luck,
pam

Hi, HTH, and everyone--I'm going to get some of the udder cream (I finally found it) and the silicone stuff. Havent had much luck with the Johnson's, dont know why, but it seemed like it made my skin more inflammed. Have patch tested all this stuff in different spots, and so far, the Norwegian stuff stays on longer. Whiz.
