I'm sure there are others out there, actually I may have an account with another one like this, but it still perturbs me. I tried paying off dh's Discover card last month, only to get a bill for 20 some dollars b/c of finance charges, b/c the stupid company adds their interest on a daily basis. I'm not on the account and dh is "overseas" so I have to send them a copy of my POA, which will take about 3-4 days to put on, then I can ask them how much I have to pay to get the stupid thing paid off AND closed for good. Such a PITB. I'm really disliking ALL these credit card companies and want soooooo bad to just live on cash alone! Maybe that's a good motivation to get everything paid off faster. lol

Thanks for listening, I just needed a place to gripe about them.

Hi Michelle,

Aren't they all a royal PITB? They find every which way to squeeze every last penny out of you. As much as it sucks, what you describe is standard practice in the industry.

What I do when ready to pay off a credit card is call ahead and ask for the "10-day payoff amount." They will calculate what the total payoff amount will be in ten days (you can ask for a longer payoff date if it takes longer for your checks to get there), and you send them that amount. That eliminates extra interest charges after the fact. It does mean that sometimes you will end up with a credit on your account, and you will have to request a refund--you better believe they won't send you that check without you asking first! LOL

Won't it feel great when we don't have to deal with these bloodsuckers any more? This is exactly the motivation that keeps me going.

Peace and blessings,

Heather

Hi, Michelle--Discover, eh? Well, I "discovered" that it wasnt all that it was cracked up to be. Kinda like gambling. I mean, $35 for all that was charged over time (about $4K) in the cash back bonus. What bonus? It's insane--17% interest rate. So, I rolled the balance to Capital One. What's in my wallet? Well, an inactivated card. Hee Hee. That means, I have to pay it off, and not accrue any more debt on that card! Ba da bing---just keep paying on it little by little. Oh yeah, I slipped up and used the Discover (!) to charge some medical stuff. At least the Discover is down to $800 instead of $3K. Here's rooting for you! WHiz. :)

Let's just say that I know Discover VERY, VERY well and on average it takes a person $6k in debt to rack up their silly $20 cashback bonus. It is the worse scam out there. The best thing to do is to use cards only for emergencies and never think about their point/cashback system because you never get anything in return. It's a psychological ploy to make you spend.

"Ohhh earn 5% cashback bonus on gas." Yea well, the 5% is capped and you're spending more in the finance charges (since Discover has one of the higher APRs).
