I called discover about my dh's account (I'm not on it so had to fax them a POA) to find out what the REAL payoff amount was. They lady I talked to said that it was the amount that was shown on dh's statement. I asked her 'are you sure that's the right amount' and she said yes, so I was like 'there are no other finance charges on top of that' and she said NO. I told her I wanted to bring it to a 0 balance so wanted to make sure that was the remainder that needed to be paid. She said, "let me see if I can waive that", I was like 'ok'. And voila! She waived those finance charges so I don't have to send them a penny more!! Yeah! I'm so happy! I really hate giving these cc companys anymore money that absolutely necessary. So a victory for me (or us I should say)!
Oh, and I also called one of our other cards that dh and I are on to see about getting a lower rate. They said they didn't have any other offers so I mentioned that my dh was deployed and they said they can give us the deployment rate which is 4% for that card. I said GREAT!
So FINALLY we are making some real progress here!
Thanks for listening to my ramblings, I just had to share my good news!

That's terrific! Hurray! Now I know to call about having extra finance charges waived--maybe I'll do that instead of asking for the payoff amount!
I actually found Discover to be easy to deal with when we were having trouble. I just called them and told them dh was out of work and the rest of the sob story, and they put us on a six-month plan that lowered our minimum charge to $16 a month and our interest rate to something really low (don't remember what right now). After that, things went back to normal, but it gave us a break we needed to get things set right.
So Discover was actually one of the last cards I worked on paying off, because I didn't mind sending them my money so much since they had been nice to me even when I was in trouble.
Of course, now (four years later), everything that's left is on zero- or very low-interest cards, so it's all been transferred from original creditors at least once.
Great job, taking the initiative and getting that done. I'm glad the result was positive!
