Just wondering if anyone else has seen the episode regarding the predictions for the Oil Crisis in 2009? I was watching it earlier tonight on CNN, talk about some scary stuff. Basically it's about the predictions for 2009 and what will happen regarding our oil crisis and gas prices and chaos all over the world.
Really makes me stop and think that we should really be watching what we spend our money on, be very frugal, and save, save, save. Also makes me think about buying a Hybrid or a vehicle that takes e-85 (although I have no idea where we would get this fuel around here).

I'm already scared about our oil situation, although I'm loathe to trust the media's reports on such things--seems like they're always looking for the next way to scare us witless.
Still, I think it's wise to start thinking about alternatives. One alternative is to buy a diesel vehicle, as they can be powered on easily home-made bio-diesel. When I say easily, of course, I mean it's easy once you get over the learning curve and invest in the equipment ($300-$700 depending on how much work you're willing to put into salvaging parts and finding cheap parts and assembling it yourself, etc.--$700 is a ready-made kit). Bio-diesel can be made with lye, methanol (wood alcohol), and vegetable oil (either waste oil that's been filtered and cleaned, or fresh oil).
Of course, auto manufacturers don't make much in diesel for the American market, much to my dismay. If I could get a good diesel mini-van, I'd jump all over it.
E-85 is a good option too, but unfortunately ONLY the American manufacturers (and only some of them) make vehicles compatible with it. Which is silly, because it's a simple matter really, nothing like trying to engineer around hybrid technology, and yet potentially more valuable, as ethanol is made from readily renewable vegetable sources.
Of course, we also need to find a way to curb American appetites, as all the cropland in the world will soon be too little to support our fuel consumption if we all convert to bio-diesel and ethanol. Then what would we eat?
It's a sad situation, and one I think a lot about as we contemplate our next vehicle purchase.
Sigh. But I'm not convinced 2009 is a magic number in particular. It'll be when it bes. And the best we can do is try to think and plan ahead, build up trust and commitment in our communities, learn a little self reliance here and there, and hope for the best. Oh, yes, and pray!
Gotta run. Blessings,
Heather

Heather I just got an Excursion! I love it its better then a minivan any day. Seats about 9 people, 7 comfotably with space between. The dogs cages fit perfectly in the back. And its diesel.
