Thanks for the cheers. It looks like my next credit card will be paid off in 6 months. Our "payoff date" for all credit cards is looking to be 2 years or more, so it's nice to have a few quick wins in 2006. We've paid off credit cards before, but didn't change the spending pattern
Congratulations! We live credit card free and it isn't hard at all to say "NO!" once you pay them off. When I go to stores and get "would you like to open up an account with us today" and I say "NO!" and they say "you can save 10% on today's purchases" I reply "or I can save 27% interest in NOT OPENING AN ACCOUNT!!" and tell them we live credit card debt free and I usually get "I wish I was you" response.
It took us a good 2 years of cutting expenses to pay off our cards. It's been 6 years and we've got a nice savings on top of being able to live comfortably. It can happen and will happen as long as you stay on track and remember the BIG PICTURE. I still remember walking out of a store with nothing bought. Now I can shop if I want to but usually don't unless it's something we really need. But it's nice to know I can buy something if I really want it, with CASH!!
Good Luck to you! Stay strong and pretty soon you will be debt free!!
The reason I have more than one credit card is because I've taken advantage of balance transfer offers this year. All of the "balance transfer" cards have nothing on them except the transferred balance.
Regarding store cards, I have resisted those offers for 2 years so far, but my DH opened a Macy's card when shopping for my christmas gift. Grrr. Of course, the first invoice showed up *after* the due date, so we were charged $20 interest and a late fee on a $30 purchase! That one bit the dust immediately and my DH now understands the concept of "stupid tax". =)
I'm *definitely* looking forward to being credit card and mortgage free!
