Ok I remember reading on here that someone fixed their own problem when the check engine light came on.

We were in Kragen's auto parts store recently and I'm sure I saw a gadget that would read the codes -- my suggestion is to stop in a a local auto parts/supply store and ask them if they have something for sale that would do that. I am sure the thing was under 100.00 -- probably a lot less. It might be worth it over the long while.

I am surprised auto zone doesn't do it. I thought it was part of their national campaign. When I went to autozone and they hooked me up they said it was one of 2 things.
1) the gas cap...which it did turn out to be and took 3 days for the check engine light to go off. My friend that had that happend has a BMW and it took over 2 weeks for it to register. I went ahead and bought a new one for 6 bucks.
2) The Vacuum hoses...so maybe your husband could check those? I have no idea where they are...but mine were fine.
Is there another autozone in your area? Maybe they do it....
It could have been the gas cap but the code needs to be cleared out before the light will go off. My ex bought one of the code readers last year and that is what it turned out to be. I think it cost him about 60.00 for the reader and I believe it cleared out the codes too.
Also some vehicles (Dodges) are just set to go off to force the drivers in for a checkup at certain miles (really odd number miles too). That is what it ended up being with my mom's truck so after the mechanic told her that, she just put a sticker over the light and ignored it. Me, I wouldn't do that since then if something really bad happens, you won't know it.
Also, check that you don't have a tail light or something burned out. Have someone stand behind the car, turn the lights on, step on the brakes, put on the turn signal, and make sure all of that is working. This just happened to someone last week at work, and that is all it turned out to be. Strange that it would make the check engine light go on, but it did.
