Moving question

My dh and i have decided we will move back to WI in August. So far, we have $4300 set aside for our move. We will need $1350 of that for sec deposit and first month's rent. Then we will need another $700 for the moving truck. We will need to buy couches for the living room, and a dining room set once we get there, too, because ours didn't make our first move (the dining room set will be a much bigger priority than the couches, i think)
I expect to have our moving fund up to $6500 before we actually move. i will be able to start at my old job almost immediately, but my husband will have to interview once we are up there, most likely. It took him two months to get a job out here, but he was being pretty particular about the jobs he was interviewing for, and we had so much stuff going on, too.
Anyhow, does this sound all right? I could pay less towards my debt right now and try to set aside more money, but I am pretty psyched because our cc debt with drop below $20,000 in the next month (down from $28550 at the end of 2004), and our total debt has dropped below the 50K mark.
This is actually the first time we have had a substantial moving fund, and we have moved four times in the past 3.5 years. this will be time #5.
Thoughts?
Heather

Do you want to buy your furniture out of that too? If so it depends on how much you want to spend on that. If you like to buy from major furniture places you might start shopping now. We bought a living room set at Montgomery Wards years ago and had it delivered to a store that was 500 miles away.
If I was you I would probably put all the extra in savings until you move and once the moving is done throw whatever is left onto debt. It would suck to underestimate. As for if you have the right amount...I don't know because when we moved we just needed $ for the unhaul and that ran us about $500...
Will your daughter be able to go right back into special services up there??
My daughter will not be able to start her programming right away because there is a six month residency requirement, but she will be going to an awesome school with great teachers...we don't have that here.
We will just keep plugging away at it, i guess...

Whiz,
There are actually some pretty good furniture outlets pretty close to where i will be living...and i am not worried about getting fantastic stuff....I can always replace it later when I am in a better financial situation.
My dd's therapy would cost a ton to get started without assistance...I would probably just meet with a consultant once a month or so and run her programming myself. She has $800 in her account from SSI, which she doesn't get anymore. It would be enough to cover something, but again, she will at least have the benefit of going to a terrific school.
i'm hoping dh would at least be able to get a temp job fairly quickly.
I can't believe this is going to be a reality for us! I am so relieved!!

Whiz,
Stuff just doesn't mean that much to me anymore. I always go through everything before i pitch it..because I have found some old photos and letters, but other than that, i can make due with my clothes and my books, and my computer. i haven't even watched any TV since the American Idol finale, and that was the only show i was watching.
I just go painfully thru each box one at a time, until it starts to make a difference. I've held onto some things i would like to sell at a garage sale...stuff in a few years i would probably just donate, but with our debt situation what it is it just wouldn't be responsible for us to do that right now. So the last weekend in June, i will be having a garage sale.
You so exactly what i do though...fill up the trash cans each week, and call it quits. Hey, we even rented a Dumpster and didn't get anywhere in my Dad's house.
I try to be respectful of my husband's position, though, as he is much more attached to stuff than i am. And the kids, too.
I just think my life would be better without so much stuff in it. I need tranquility and peacefulness, not junk.
But um, forking over $42,000/yr to run my daughter's therapy full time is just not ever going to happen, so I have to do babysteps with that, too, and hope that each little step is one that will make a difference.

Hello Heather,
My DH is much more attached to his stuff than I am. I've stopped trying to organize it and simply say "please put it away on a shelf" so that I don't trip over boxes of his stuff. Every once in awhile I'll bring him 10-12 items and ask him if he wants to keep any of them. If he says yes, they go back on the shelf. Sometimes he says toss it and I smile really big and toss it.
It has taken a few years, doing this once or twice a month, but the areas full of his "stuff" are slowly slowly slowly getting more organized. I can now discriminate between things he's likely to keep and things I can almost guarantee (but still ask) that he will toss.
Sincerely,
Lindsey Schocke

Have you tried talking with the program coordinators to see if there is anything to do to since you had been in their program before very recently. I know it may state a six month reequirement, but you were in the program before deciding to help an ailing family member. I know that if I was the person in charge and heard the story I would do what I could to help you. Just a thought...

I knew in the back of my mind that coming back t Wisconsin was a possibility before I left, so I checked into all of that, but it is a requirement of the state, not the program itself. It is specifically designed to deter people from moving to Wisconsin to access services (state money). Apparently, up to 10% of the kids receiving autism therapy in Wisconsin had parents who moved there specifically for that purpose (myself included). they don't want people coming into their state and robbing their poor citizens. I understand their point of view, however, if there is nothing else out there for my child, then what else am I supposed to do?
By the way, 66% of the funds are federal..only 33% are state. Too bad there can't be therapy everywhere for these kids. :(
