Horrible "People" (long)

I have been dealing with NES (National Enterprise Systems) for the past week. At first the woman was somewhat kind, understanding a very willing to work with me. She made is sound as if she was an attorney, "because a complaint had be filed against me". I have been VERY willing to work with this company and I have returned every phone call promptly. However, as the days have gone on they have become increasingly more nasty.
Today, in fact, was the worst. The woman that I have been dealing with transfered me over to one of her coworkers, a man. As our conversation proceeded he became increasingly nasty and would not listen to anything I had to say. He kept raising his voice and completely talking over me. He told me that I needed to make a decision with the settlement right then and there or else the settlement would be dropped and I would have to go to court to pay the full amount. I told the man that I would need to call the person who is loaning me the money before I made any decision. I told the man that I needed to make sure the money would be in my account before I agreed. He then became very harsh and told me that I needed to make the decision now. He told me that I needed to stop "passing the buck and start acting like a responsible adult". He told me that he would take my checking account number and if the funds are not in there by the 15th of this month that I would be charged with a faulty check as well as taken to court for the full amount I owe. I tried to explain to him that a lot has happened over the past year and I just needed to make one phone call. He then began to yell at me calling me a failure and that I will more than likely fail at everything I do, so why not add this failure to my list. He told me that I will never be able to get a job with my bad credit history and that if he were an employer he would throw my application right in the trash because all I am is a failure. He then said if I hang up with him to make my phone call that the settlement is off and I will be taken to court. So, he really left me really with no choice but to give him my checking account information. I am now just hoping and praying that I will have the funds in there to cover the settlement by May 15th. If all he was doing was trying to scare me, it most certainly worked.
I just don't know how people like that can live with themselves after being so incredibly nasty and inhumane (more than likely all day long, day after day). And, I know that I am NOT the only one he has probably spoke to this way. I just keeping thinking that Karma is a wonderful thing... what goes around comes around. You cannot honestly think that you can treat someone that way and everything be okay.
These people need to be stopped. I feel like I was completely taken advantage of. The economy is so bad right now... if you don't have the money what are you suppose to do? According to them, you get sued... for what, I am really not sure (especially if you have nothing).

With this almost said and done with me giving them my checking account number, can I call them back and cancel the payment? Also, I have documented all our conversations on paper, especially the one today... would that hold any ground? I wish I would have known all about this before. I am really trying not to let this get to me... too much. However, I am so upset and cannot stop crying. I just feel so taken advantage of. I live in Ohio, so I'll have to check their laws.
Thank you so much for your input... it does help! Hopefully there will never be a next time.
Thanks again for your input!
I live in IN. If a collection agency gets nasty with you like that, you can report it to the state attorney general's office. I've done that before--after talking with them I was told it isn't unusual for that behaviour--most just don't report it.
Just for future reference, never give a collection agency (or anyone you do initiate contact with) your bank info.
