I can pick about 8 of those answers! We need checkboxes instead of radio buttons. ;)
Vacations are important to mental health, but to me, "vacation" isn't synonymous with "going somewhere." I would never ever go into debt for a vacation. If we don't have the money, we just won't go. I'm quite happy with staying home and doing day trips in the area, maybe going to a movie with the kids, and having dinner out a couple of times. In fact, that can be more relaxing than a hectic trip and coming home to lots of catch-up.
We are taking our first family vacation to Europe in August, and we are so excited! This will be the first *big* vacation we've ever taken. We're going to spend 10 days in Ireland, and even with the exchange rate with the euro, I know we're going to have an awesome time. We all have wanted to go for years, and this is the first year we are able to go.

I know you'll enjoy your family vacation to Ireland! My stepdad is a proud Irishman and I'd love to visit there eventually. Have an awesome trip :)
I've been to France and Switzerland, both in 2007 and again just two weeks ago! I am in love with Europe honestly...I guess we're already a bit spoiled with the Europeen flavor living in Quebec. I am fortunate in that many of my business contacts operate in Europe, so for business reasons I usually have to go there at least twice a year. In October I am heading for Seville, Spain.

Oooo, lucky you, getting to travel to Europe for business! I go to California all the time, but that's not exactly the same. ;)
I *just* got my passport. . . you can tell people aren't traveling because it took only a week to get it. My 16yo DD has already been to Spain on a school trip, so she has been to Europe before I have.
Thanks for sharing my excitement!

Thanks for the info, Carolyn. When my DD went to Spain in March, we were told that the conversion rates are best if you withdraw euros at an ATM and use cash, rather than charging things or using a debit card. Any idea if that is true? (She's 16 so she wasn't going to be using a credit card anyway.)
She had a debit card through the student tour company, which is permanent and can be loaded up at any time and used anywhere in the future. I'm thinking that would probably be the best thing for us to use when we're in Ireland, especially since it still has a balance on it.

My daughter brought about 30 euros home with her, so we'll have those, though DH will probably take them to Spain before then - he's going to a wedding there in early August. But if he forgets, we'll have them. :)
And my Blackberry will be activated for international use before then. Unfortunately as a partner in a business, I still have to work on vacation, but hopefully not too much.
Our itinerary has us landing in Dublin in late August, staying at a castle about 5 days later, and then the rest is up to us. I used my airline miles to get two free tickets (we are a family of 5). We also chose with a tour company that does independent packages that include an automatic car rental, the first night's hotel, the castle night, and then the rest is vouchers for B&Bs, and you make your own reservations so you can be wherever you want. I am looking forward to seeing Glendalough (St. Kevin is special to our family because two of my kids were born on his feast day), the Cliffs of Moher, Galway, and LOTS more. If you've been there, let me know what are the "can't miss" sights!
