Does it require signing a lease for a set amount of time? Or can you rent it month to month so that if you want or need to move before a year is up, you can give a month's notice?
I hate signing leases because I feel locked in. You never know when you might have to move for whatever reason, and if you are locked into a lease it can be expensive and difficult to break it.
There is also the chance that for that low rent there is something nasty about it that I would hate to see you stuck there for because of a lease. It could also be cheap simply because the owners aren't greedy and unless you can find previous tenants to ask, you won't know.
A lease vs. month to month is one thing to be aware of and you can consider your preferences. If things are falling apart where you are, you might just want to make the new place happen. Would the landlord take $600 up front and $600 in two weeks? Ask, the worst that they can say is no.
How independent do you want to be? If you want to be independent and do this on your own, you might wait and scrape together the money for rent so that when something great comes up, you have the money without having to ask...But perhaps it is best to get going now, and set up a pay back schedule with your gramma...
Danni had great ideas about free furniture off freecycle. You could get a vaccuum there too, post what you are looking for.
You don't need much other than a bed. Cushions on the floor will work fine until you can get going....

They didn't say anything about a lease, but did say that they would hope that the new tenants would stay for at least a year.

Erin,
Hi there!
First do you really like the apartment. That is the main thing. Ask the landlord if you can paint the wall part of the apartment.
I've got some updates for everyone here...
I went out again to look at the apartment today without my man (he was at work) but I brought along my grandparents instead, seeking approval.
