Hi everyone. Carolyn, et all, I have some dumb questions. 1) We paid the state/fed taxes. So, do we qualify for rebate?

Hi, MaryAnn :) Yes, your info helped a LOT. I still get confused sometimes with how the HELOC works. Ours isnt a typical HELOC, i.e., it isnt with the mortgage company. It is with a separate bank, so I want to say it is a separate loan thing.

Hi Whiz,

Not sure if things are the same in Canada as they are in the States, but this is my understanding about gas cards.

If you pay at the pump (where you put in your card BEFORE actually filling up) then the machine will automatically preauthorize for a set amount (my gas station was $75.00) No matter how much gas I put in, $75 was held on my CC for 48 hours, then released when the actual gas charge posted. My debit was instantaneous. It would preauth for a certain amount I selected and thats what was charged. No holds.

You can avoid all of this by paying the cashier.

Hope this helps some.

Hi, Bex--Thanks for clearing this up. I thought, OMG, there is a "hold" on my account and I cant get funds. Q again: when the grocery store asks if you want "cash back", say $20, is there a charge for that? Am trying not to get those pesky fees when taking out $$ from ATM. My bank is now charging more on "talk to the teller" fees if I do transaction there, so is it cheaper to do the grocery store way to get cash out for the week? TIA. Whiz.

Are you serious??? Talk to the teller fees??? Thats unbelievable!! From my experience (Canada) there is no fee for getting cash back since its the cashier that adds the amount to your transaction and then gives you the difference in cash. The bank has no way of knowing whether you actually spent the whole amount or whether some of it is cash. I guess the only thing you would have to watch out for is the fee normally charged by your bank for debit transactions.
