I'm down to less than a month before school starts up again and I need to start thinking about getting new work clothes.

If your clothing no longer fits the dress code, then new clothes is a *need* which is far different from going to the store and buying clothes just because you are bored.

It's sort of an all-or-nothing mentality.

All good ideas, thanks.

I got a terrible migraine from shopping for a dress for a Christmas party and I went everywhere and couldn't find anything that fit. I know also of what you speak.

I suggest as someone else did that you don't buy stuff the day you shopped for it. Ask a store to hold choices for you for 24-36 hours. Any store that wants your business will happily do it for you. Then think about it, and see if you really like the stuff. And take cash back to pay for it. You'll be able to add it all up while you think about it and you will know how much money to take back to the store to pay for what you want (whether it is all that you chose or just some of it).

I also shop faithfully at a charity thrift store in town. I do very well, get a lot of nice stuff, but it is gathered over many trips...my latest deal is a very high quality cashmere sweater in great condition that I paid $1 for.

You need and deserve clothes, so treat yourself to carefully considered purchases.

You might also try buying one set item per week over a set amount of time...make a list and shop for those items over a month or so, and check each item off your list as you purchase it, then you can't go overboard because you are only buying what you carefully considered putting on the list in the first place.

hope that helps.

The one item at a time idea is good.

It's actually on my to-do list to check both places tomorrow!

I have to tell you that I experience this sometimes. I NEED new work shoes (I had back surgery in 1992 and I HAVE to wear good work shoes or I'm in pain for days), but I'm too cheap to buy 'em. I know I NEED 'em and it's not a matter of WANTING them, but dang if I can bring myself to buy 'em. Same with work clothes. We have a dress code at work and I'm so cheap about buying new stuff - I'm wearing a belt cinched tight with my way too big pants. I don't want to buy new ones!

I can relate. I had this too, as well as the same thing when I have to buy gifts for other people (almost having panic attacks last Christmas). So, I take a little bit of money from every paycheque and put them into my "gift account" and "clothing account" (I use ING, and once you have an account, you can open as many accounts as you want under your customer number for free). Now, I don't feel bad when I need some clothes or some gifts, because I have money that I planned to use for those purposes.
