Temptations everywhere! Grrr...

I guess the reason why I panic about spending now is that I worked so hard on learning to overcome buying for fun.

My temptations generally involve eating out/ going out with friends.
Every once in a while I go through a shopping kick where I decide I *must* have the latest/greatest for the house but I haven't had one of those in a while. Last time I did it, I confessed on this board, and the ladies were able to talk me into returning many of the items foolishly purchased. I felt a lot better.
As for the clothes thing, I hear your pain (I read the other post but am responding here!). I have an alright supply of summer clothes (when I was in uni my summer placements required professional clothes, so I have those) but fall and winter are seriously lacking. Goodwill has 50% off sales every now and again, and I find they are the best places for work clothes. A blouse is a blouse is a blouse as far as I'm concerned. So why pay $50 when you can pay $5!!!

I have several temptations which makes this debt reduction stuff challanging for me.
All my best,

After years of controlling expenses, I'm just not that tempted by stuff. I spend when I've told myself I can spend, and sometimes I spend too much because I didn't realize I had enough shoes, tops, suits already, but not because I was tempted by an item.
Overall I think I just got out of the habit of *wanting*. It helps that, now that I've paid off the debt, I have the money to buy the things I need. If I need clothes for this season, I make a list, buy the stuff, and I'm done, no more looking at ads or thinking about buying stuff. I rarely buy something just because I saw it and wanted it.
And I hate clutter, so buying things that are "wants" just means more clutter, more stuff to move around, more stuff to take care of. No thanks.

That's such a good outlook!
I remember your Gymboree stuff and am so impressed that you've conquered that!
Hi, my name is Anne and I'm a recovered Gymboree addict as well! I have two boys, and my Gymboree habit didn't start until my first son was about 18 months old. Then my second son was born a preemie. . . he was tiny and so I could actually buy those tiny preemie outfits! He stayed small for his first two years, whereas my other son was big, so I didn't really have any clothes to hand down, but boy did I love buying those tiny adorable clothes! Good thing I didn't have a girl, or I probably would've put us in the poorhouse obsessing over all the cute outfits and matching accessories! I still will sometimes buy some basics from Gymboree when they have their clearances, but I no longer buy the bulk of their clothes from there when the new lines come out.
Good job putting an end to your habit--I know it's hard! I agree with the other posts about letting her dress herself. . . go with that angle and no one will bat an eyelash!
I tried to justify it by saying that I was getting these items so cheap, which I was. I would mostly buy end of season sale and usually had coupons. But Gymboree can be quite addicting, so when new lines came out I just couldn't resist some of those pieces, so then I would pay a lot more!
I would also justify it by saying that I can resell these items on ebay usually for what I paid for them, which was usually true also, but I just couldn't stop myself! Then I end up with 2-3 times the amount of clothing any one child should have.
I have been doing much better this past year after the Dave Ramsey Financial Peace Class. I decided to quit selling Gymbo on ebay and that has really helped me out too!
