We have a ton of debt and we are slowly working our way out.

Susie:

I used to just whip out the CC too and am not doing that anymore. Even when I used credit cards, I always had the kids make a list of what they needed for back to school first. They'd try on shoes and clothes and we'd figure out notebooks and paper needs before we left the house. Sometimes, we had things at home that they were not aware of, so this avoided impulse buys. In my family, we get just as excited over organizing supplies as we do shirts and jeans.

Once we'd do that, we'd have to figure out what was necessary for the first couple weeks of school and what could wait until the next payday. I don't usually buy them everything for the fall in one

What about showing them that with x amount, they could either get 3 budget outfits (still looking good if you shop around) or 1 designer?

I generally don't purchase new clothing unless it's actually needed.

I agree with what the others have said.

At the end of the summer, my mom and I would go through my closets and drawers and wash everything. Then we would pull items out one by one and reorganize. Generally speaking I didn't NEED all that much and I found some stuff I forgot about. I would usually start off the school year with very few new items. We were more "shop at the end of the season" type people. Of course, as soon as I started working (14) she stopped buying my clothes and it was all up to me!
