Hello everyone. I've lurked here a couple of times but was hit with something today and need advice. I have a family friend in the mortgage business who's helping me refi my house. I'm not doing that because I need money, just have to do it to get the house solely in my name. (Just divorced ex and need to get his name off of everything.) So, he ran a credit check on me and found 2 negatives. One is for Sprint that says something went into collections. That I completely don't understand as I'm current w/my Sprint account. I did get a notice of something being late before, but it was ex's account and he told me he paid it off. (Trust me, I'll be checking to see if that's it).
The second is my fault. I had DirecTV for several years and cancelled them earlier this year because I was having technical issues and their customer

You said they sent your account to collections. What happened? Did it get charged off?
Have you seen your credit report? Get a copy of it, you are allowed a free one per year (but I don't know if someone pulling your report to re-fi your mortgage changes that). See what is actually negative on there.
If DirecTv is a negative I would definitely contact them, in writing. Explain briefly that you didn't know there was a second receiver (because your ex packed it when he moved out) and offer to send it back. Regardless of their response, I would offer in writing to make the account right, and keep copies of your letters. You might also explain that you are seeking to make your account right not only because you realized the mistake, but because you would like the company to note with the credit bureaus that you fixed your account with them. Then you have something to argue the negative on your credit report with should you need to take it that far.
As for the Sprint issue, when you get a copy of your credit report in the mail, it comes with a form to fill out to register a dispute of anything that you find on there. You could use that if you are certain Sprint has reported something negative when they shouldn't have. I don't know if you should contact Sprint before filling out that form or just fill out the form. Hopefully you will get some other opinions.
Trans Union and Equifax are two places to get your credit report from. When I have looked at their websites I seem to recall it took me awhile to figure out how to request a free (paper) copy of my report...they seem to like to sell you instant online versions. But checking their websites is where I would start.
